What the Latest Hallmarking Expansion Means
The expansion increases the geographical reach of India’s mandatory gold hallmarking system. With more districts brought under the framework, consumers in the newly covered areas will have greater access to hallmark-certified gold jewellery and artefacts.
For jewellers operating in the newly added districts, the expansion also increases the importance of compliance with the applicable hallmarking requirements under the BIS framework.
The latest order replaces the earlier annexure to the Hallmarking of Gold Jewellery and Gold Artefacts Order, 2020 with the revised state-wise district list.
Previous Hallmarking Framework Updated
The notification notes that the principal order was originally published in the Gazette of India on January 15, 2020, and was last amended through S.O. 2117(E) dated April 28, 2026.
The August 2026 order therefore represents another update to the district-wise coverage under India’s gold hallmarking framework.
Bottom Line
The latest expansion takes mandatory gold hallmarking coverage to 392 districts, up from 380 previously. The 12 newly added districts are spread across Assam, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand and West Bengal.
