DGFT’s new trade notice introduced a simplified route for faster silver import authorisations, effective October 15. Eligible applicants must submit self-declarations, pay generally applicable customs duty without concessions, and justify import quantities and values. Authorised silver must come through IIBX or nominated banks/agencies, with approvals valid for six months.

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, has introduced a simplified procedure to speed up the issuance of import authorisations for specified silver bullion categories. The move is intended to reduce processing time for eligible applicants and improve ease of doing business while maintaining the applicable import policy requirements. The new procedure was announced through Trade Notice No. 30/2026-27, dated October 13, 2026, issued by the Government of India. The revised process will be available for eligible fresh and revised applications submitted on or after October 15, 2026.

Check out the latest Gold, Silver prices in MCX, International Market, Sarafa and your city on https://goldpricetodaynews.com/

Silver Import Policy Changed from Free to Restricted

The trade notice refers to Notification Nos. 17/2026-27 dated May 16, 2026, and 19/2026-27 dated June 2, 2026. Under these notifications, the import policy for four specified silver product categories was changed from ‘Free’ to ‘Restricted’.

The affected ITC(HS) codes are:

71069110

71069120

71069221

71069229

Importers seeking authorisations for these categories are required to submit applications through the DGFT portal. The newly introduced procedure is designed to facilitate faster processing for qualifying applications, with silver dore specifically excluded.

Self-Declaration to Help Speed Up Silver Import Approvals

Under the simplified procedure, eligible applications may be considered for expedited disposal on the basis of self-declaration and trust.

Applicants must declare that the proposed silver imports will be made by paying customs duty at the generally applicable rate, without claiming concessions. Applications meeting this condition may qualify for faster processing.

Applications that do not fall within this category will continue to undergo detailed scrutiny and examination on their merits, in accordance with the applicable import policy provisions.

What Importers Must Submit With Their Applications

Importers applying for authorisations must complete all mandatory fields in the online application form available on the DGFT portal. They must also provide a reasoned justification explaining the proposed quantity and value of silver imports.

Applicants seeking expedited processing must submit the prescribed self-declaration. Although the information may be accepted on the basis of this declaration, applicants remain responsible for ensuring that the information provided is correct and complete.

The simplified process does not remove the need to comply with applicable import policy conditions or other statutory requirements.

Pending Applications Can Be Revised as a One-Time Measure

DGFT has also provided a one-time opportunity for applicants whose silver import authorisation applications are currently pending on the portal.

Under this arrangement, pending applications will be marked as deficient on the portal so that applicants can make the necessary revisions, provide missing declarations and submit the required self-declaration wherever applicable.

Once revised, these applications will be considered under the procedure outlined in the trade notice.

New Procedure Applies from October 15, 2026

The trade notice states that fresh applications received and revised applications submitted on or after October 15, 2026 may be processed under the simplified procedure, provided they are complete and satisfy all specified conditions.

Authorisations issued under this route will be based on the applicant’s self-declaration, subject to the applicable policy provisions and conditions attached to the authorisation.

Silver Must Be Procured Through IIBX or Nominated Banks and Agencies

An important condition of the new procedure concerns the permitted procurement channels for authorised silver imports.

Import authorisations issued under the simplified route will specify that the authorised items must be procured only through:

India International Bullion Exchange (IIBX); or

Nominated Banks or Agencies notified under Appendix 4B of the Foreign Trade Policy, 2023, as amended.

According to the trade notice, this requirement is intended to route silver imports through regulated channels and improve transaction transparency and traceability.

DGFT Retains the Right to Conduct Further Scrutiny

Despite introducing a faster approval route, DGFT has retained the authority to request additional information or documents and conduct detailed scrutiny whenever considered necessary.

The department may verify declarations submitted by applicants to ensure compliance with the applicable policy provisions. Processing under the simplified procedure does not exempt importers from any statutory or policy requirement.

Silver Import Authorisations Valid for Six Months

Import authorisations issued under the new procedure will remain valid for six months from the date of issue. The trade notice expressly states that these authorisations will not be eligible for extension.

The notice was issued with the approval of the competent authority and signed by Sudhir Kumar Sharma, Deputy Director General of Foreign Trade.

FAQ’s

1. What has DGFT changed in the silver bullion import authorisation process?

DGFT has introduced a simplified procedure for expedited processing of eligible applications covering specified silver items under ITC(HS) codes 71069110, 71069120, 71069221 and 71069229. The procedure is based on self-declaration and trust, subject to applicable policy conditions.

2. When will the new silver import authorisation procedure take effect?

The simplified procedure may be used for fresh applications received and revised applications submitted on or after October 15, 2026, provided they are complete and meet the conditions specified in Trade Notice No. 30/2026-27.

3. What conditions must applicants meet to qualify for expedited processing?

Applicants must complete the mandatory fields on the DGFT portal, provide a reasoned justification for the quantity and value of the proposed imports, and submit the prescribed self-declaration. For expedited consideration, they must declare that imports will be made at the generally applicable customs duty rate without availing concessions.

4. Through which channels must silver imports under these authorisations be procured?

The authorised silver must be procured only through the India International Bullion Exchange (IIBX) or through nominated banks and agencies notified under Appendix 4B of the Foreign Trade Policy, 2023, as amended. This condition is intended to improve transparency and transaction traceability.

5. How long will the silver import authorisations remain valid?

Authorisations issued under the simplified procedure will be valid for six months from the date of issue and cannot be extended. DGFT also retains the right to request additional documents or conduct detailed scrutiny when necessary.

Gold rose more than 1% and is heading for its strongest weekly gain since January, supported by weaker oil prices and easing inflation expectations.

Gold prices climbed more than 1% on Friday, putting the precious metal on track for its strongest weekly performance since January 2026, as softer crude oil prices boosted investor sentiment. Market participants are now closely watching the United States Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) report, which could influence expectations for future Federal Reserve interest rate decisions.

Check out the latest Gold, Silver prices in MCX, International Market, Sarafa and your city on our new website – https://goldpricetodaynews.com/

Gold Extends Weekly Rally

In early trading, U.S. gold futures advanced 1.1% to 4,344.90 US Dollars per troy ounce today morning at about 09:00 AM, extending this week’s gains. The rally comes after gold spent several weeks consolidating above the 4,000 US Dollar level before breaking higher.

The latest move reflects growing optimism among investors as inflation expectations eased following signs of improving geopolitical conditions in the Middle East.

Lower Oil Prices Support Precious Metals

According to StoneX Senior Analyst Matt Simpson, hopes of easing tensions in the Middle East have reduced inflation concerns, helping gold break out of its recent trading range.

Lower crude oil prices have also contributed to the bullish momentum. Softer energy prices reduce inflationary pressures, which in turn may lessen expectations that interest rates will remain elevated for an extended period. While gold is traditionally viewed as a hedge against inflation, lower interest rate expectations generally improve its appeal because the metal does not generate interest income.

US Jobs Report in Focus

Investors are awaiting the release of the July U.S. Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) report, one of the most closely watched economic indicators. The employment data is expected to provide fresh clues about the strength of the U.S. economy and the Federal Reserve’s next policy move.

Market analysts believe the report could trigger short-term volatility across precious metals and financial markets.

Analysts See Strong Technical Support

Matt Simpson noted that the 4,000 US Dollar level has emerged as a significant support zone for gold. Even if the jobs report creates near-term volatility, he believes buyers are likely to step in on price declines, potentially driving gold toward the 4,600 US Dollar level over time.

His comments suggest that the broader technical outlook remains constructive despite possible short-term fluctuations.

Fed Rate Expectations Remain Key

According to the CME FedWatch Tool, traders currently assign about a 55% probability to another U.S. interest rate increase in September.

Any shift in expectations following the employment report could have a significant impact on gold prices, as higher interest rates generally strengthen the U.S. dollar and reduce the attractiveness of non-yielding assets like gold.

Silver Eyes a Potential Breakout

Precious metals brokerage Marex expects gold to trade within a wider range during August while maintaining a positive outlook.

The firm also noted that silver is approaching the upper boundary of a trading range that has remained intact for nearly two months. A decisive breakout above that range could pave the way for silver to target 68 US Dollars per troy ounce.

FAQs

1. Why is gold rising this week?

Gold is gaining on the back of lower crude oil prices, easing inflation expectations, and increased investor demand ahead of the U.S. Nonfarm Payrolls report, which could shape expectations for future Federal Reserve interest rate decisions.

2. Why is the U.S. Nonfarm Payrolls report important for gold?

The Nonfarm Payrolls report is a key indicator of the U.S. labor market. Strong or weak employment data can influence Federal Reserve policy, affecting the U.S. dollar, bond yields, and ultimately the direction of gold prices.

3. What is supporting gold’s long-term outlook?

Analysts believe the 4,000 US Dollar per troy ounce level has become a strong technical support. Combined with expectations of lower inflation and steady investor demand, this has strengthened the longer-term bullish outlook for gold.

4. How do crude oil prices affect gold?

Lower crude oil prices can reduce inflation expectations, influencing interest rate outlooks. If investors expect lower borrowing costs in the future, gold often benefits because it becomes more attractive compared to interest-bearing assets.

5. What is the outlook for silver?

Market analysts believe silver is approaching a key technical resistance level after trading within a narrow range for nearly two months. A successful breakout could signal further upside momentum in the precious metal over the coming weeks.

StoneX believes silver's recent breakout is being driven by optimism surrounding U.S.-Iran diplomatic negotiations rather than changes in market fundamentals. While improving sentiment has supported prices above key resistance, analysts warn that any setback in talks could quickly reverse gains and trigger a sharp correction in the precious metal.

Silver prices have broken above their recent trading range, but according to commodity analysts at StoneX, the rally is being fueled more by geopolitical developments than by changes in the metal’s own supply-and-demand fundamentals. The firm believes that improving sentiment surrounding the ongoing U.S.-Iran diplomatic negotiations has boosted investors’ appetite for risk, helping silver extend its recent gains.

Check out the latest Gold, Silver prices in MCX, International Market, Sarafa and your city on our new website – https://goldpricetodaynews.com/

However, StoneX cautions that the same geopolitical optimism supporting the rally could quickly turn into a source of volatility if negotiations fail to deliver positive outcomes.

U.S.-Iran Diplomacy Becomes the Main Driver for Silver

According to StoneX market analysis, silver’s breakout above its summer consolidation range has been largely sentiment-driven. Growing optimism that the United States and Iran could move closer to a diplomatic agreement has improved overall market confidence, encouraging investors to shift towards risk-sensitive assets, including silver.

Unlike rallies supported by tightening physical supply or rising industrial demand, the current move is primarily based on changing geopolitical expectations. This means silver’s direction may continue to depend heavily on developments outside the precious metals market.

Bullish Breakout Needs to Hold Above Key Technical Levels

StoneX notes that silver has successfully moved above an important resistance zone that had limited price gains for several months. Maintaining prices above this former resistance would strengthen the technical outlook and increase confidence that the breakout could continue in the coming sessions.

Analysts believe sustained buying above these levels would reinforce bullish momentum and encourage additional participation from technical traders.

Breakdown in Talks Could Trigger Sharp Correction

Despite the positive momentum, StoneX warns that silver remains highly vulnerable to any deterioration in U.S.-Iran negotiations.

If diplomatic discussions fail or geopolitical tensions escalate again, investor sentiment could quickly shift toward a risk-off environment. Such a reversal may push silver back below recently reclaimed support levels and trigger a deeper correction.

The firm points out that several long-term technical support zones remain below current prices. These historical levels could become important areas for buyers if the market experiences a significant pullback.

Market Sentiment Remains the Biggest Risk

StoneX emphasizes that silver’s current rally is built primarily on improving investor sentiment rather than structural changes in the physical silver market.

As a result, headlines related to U.S.-Iran diplomacy are likely to remain one of the most important catalysts for short-term price movements. Positive diplomatic progress could extend the rally, while any setback could quickly erase recent gains.

What Investors Should Watch Next

Market participants are expected to closely monitor:

Developments in U.S.-Iran diplomatic negotiations.

Silver’s ability to remain above its recent breakout level.

Changes in overall global risk sentiment.

Technical support levels in case of increased market volatility.

According to StoneX, these factors are likely to determine whether silver’s breakout develops into a sustained uptrend or turns into a short-lived rally.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Why does StoneX believe silver prices are rising?

StoneX says silver’s recent rally is primarily being driven by optimism surrounding U.S.-Iran diplomatic negotiations, which has improved global investor sentiment and increased demand for risk-sensitive assets rather than changes in silver’s physical supply or industrial demand.

2. Why are U.S.-Iran talks important for the silver market?

According to StoneX, diplomatic progress between the United States and Iran has boosted overall market confidence. Because the current rally is sentiment-driven, any positive or negative developments in negotiations could have a direct impact on short-term silver prices.

3. What could cause silver prices to decline?

StoneX warns that if U.S.-Iran negotiations break down or geopolitical tensions escalate again, market sentiment could rapidly shift toward risk aversion. This may trigger heavy selling in silver and push prices back toward important long-term technical support levels.

4. What technical level should investors monitor?

Analysts at StoneX suggest that silver must remain above its recently broken resistance zone to confirm the strength of the bullish breakout. Holding above this level would improve the probability of a sustained upward trend.

5. What factors are likely to influence silver prices in the coming weeks?

StoneX expects U.S.-Iran diplomatic developments, shifts in global risk sentiment, investor positioning, and silver’s ability to hold above key technical support and resistance levels to remain the primary drivers of price movement in the near term.

StoneX says precious metals are no longer moving as one asset class. Gold remains driven by monetary policy and central bank demand, while silver is gaining momentum from artificial intelligence, semiconductors and solar technology. Palladium is also finding new industrial applications, expanding its long-term demand beyond the automotive sector.

StoneX believes the precious metals market is entering a new phase where each metal is increasingly responding to its own supply and demand dynamics instead of moving together as a single asset class. According to the firm’s latest market analysis, gold, silver and palladium are now being influenced by distinct economic and industrial factors, requiring investors to reassess traditional market assumptions.

Check the latest rates for gold and silver—including MCX, international market, and bullion prices, as well as rates in your city—on our new website: https://goldpricetodaynews.com/

Individual Fundamentals Are Taking Centre Stage

For many years, precious metals often moved in the same direction as investors reacted to broad economic conditions. However, StoneX says that trend is changing.

While gold continues to be largely influenced by monetary policy expectations and central bank buying, silver and palladium are increasingly responding to developments in industrial sectors such as artificial intelligence, semiconductor manufacturing and clean energy technologies.

The shift suggests that market participants should evaluate each metal based on its own fundamentals rather than treating precious metals as a single investment category.

Experienced Market Perspective

Rhona O’Connell, Head of Market Analysis for EMEA and Asia at StoneX, has spent decades analysing global precious metals markets across multiple commodity and monetary cycles.

Her approach combines macroeconomic analysis with detailed insight into physical demand, allowing her to identify structural changes that extend beyond short-term price fluctuations.

Gold’s Correction Does Not Change Long-Term Outlook

According to O’Connell, gold’s recent price correction reflects investor positioning, liquidity pressures and changing interest rate expectations rather than any deterioration in its longer-term fundamentals.

Although short-term market conditions have created volatility, the broader outlook for gold remains linked to monetary policy and continued central bank demand.

Silver Demand Gains Strength Beyond Gold

StoneX expects silver to become increasingly independent from gold as industrial consumption continues to expand.

O’Connell said growing demand from artificial intelligence, semiconductor production, solar technology and electrification is creating new sources of support for the metal.

She also noted that silver mine supply remains relatively inelastic because much of global production is generated as a by-product of mining other metals. As a result, stronger industrial demand could continue to influence silver prices even during periods when gold prices remain stable or weaken.

Palladium Finds New Growth Opportunities

StoneX also believes palladium’s future extends beyond its traditional role in internal combustion engine vehicles.

O’Connell highlighted Norilsk Nickel’s investment in expanding industrial applications for palladium through a 100 million US Dollar programme aimed at developing dozens of commercial uses.

Researchers are exploring the possibility of partially replacing silver in solar cells and gold in electronic components while also using artificial intelligence to accelerate materials development.

These innovations could help diversify palladium demand and gradually reduce its dependence on the automotive industry over the coming years.

FAQs

1. Why does StoneX believe precious metals are no longer moving together?

StoneX says each precious metal is increasingly responding to its own market fundamentals. Gold is influenced mainly by monetary policy, while silver and palladium are benefiting from industrial demand and technological innovation.

2. What is driving silver demand according to StoneX?

Silver demand is increasingly supported by artificial intelligence, semiconductor manufacturing, solar technology and electrification, making it less dependent on gold price movements.

3. Why does StoneX remain positive on gold’s long-term outlook?

StoneX believes gold’s recent correction is mainly the result of investor positioning, liquidity pressures and interest rate expectations rather than a weakening of its long-term fundamentals.

4. How is palladium’s market outlook changing?

Palladium is expanding beyond its traditional automotive use through new industrial applications, including potential roles in solar cells, electronics and artificial intelligence-assisted materials development.

5. What does this mean for investors in precious metals?

StoneX suggests investors should analyse gold, silver and palladium individually, as each metal is increasingly influenced by separate economic, industrial and technological drivers rather than moving together as a single asset class.

A new CIBJO Special Report says record gold, silver and platinum prices reshaped the jewellery market during 2025. While higher prices reduced manufacturing volumes, jewellery spending remained resilient. The report expects continued market volatility in 2026 and predicts responsible sourcing, traceability and ESG standards will become increasingly important for the industry.

CIBJO: With the 2026 CIBJO Congress scheduled to open in Vicenza, Italy, on September 4, the organization has released the third of its pre-congress Special Reports, offering an in-depth review of the precious metals market during 2025. Prepared by the CIBJO Precious Metals Commission, headed by Vaishali Banerjee, the report describes 2025 as a landmark year for precious metals and assesses how soaring prices influenced the global jewellery industry.

Check the latest rates for gold and silver—including MCX, international market, and bullion prices, as well as rates in your city—on our new website: https://goldpricetodaynews.com/

Gold, Silver and Platinum Reached New Highs

According to the report, gold continued the investment-led rally that had begun in previous years, while silver and platinum also climbed to record levels during 2025. Palladium likewise posted strong gains.

Despite these price increases, the impact on jewellery demand was more complex than expected. Although higher prices reduced sales volumes, the overall value of jewellery purchases increased, reflecting continued consumer interest in precious metals.

Consumers Shifted Between Precious Metals

While higher prices weighed on volume, jewellery purchase value increased significantly, reflecting sustained consumer demand,” Ms. Banerjee wrote. “Yet another trend was cross-metal substitution at both ends of the market. The high-end market saw some shifts to platinum from gold, while, at the lower end, gold-plated silver jewellery rose in markets like India and China – indicating that jewellery demand remains resilient, even as consumer purchasing patterns evolve.”

Gold Jewellery Demand Declined by Volume

While jewellery spending remained resilient in value terms, the volume of gold purchased by jewellery manufacturers declined across major markets.

In Europe, gold demand for jewellery manufacturing fell by 11 percent to 6.6 million ounces. The report also attributed part of the decline to margin pressures linked to the proposed 10 percent United States tariff. Jewellery consumption in the region also decreased by 9.3 percent.

The United States recorded its lowest level of gold jewellery consumption since 2014, with demand falling 13 percent year-on-year to 3.7 million ounces. According to the report, higher gold prices and ongoing cost-of-living pressures reduced consumer purchasing activity.

Platinum Demand Reached an Eight-Year High

Platinum experienced one of the strongest price increases during the year, rising from 977 US dollars per ounce in January to 2,303 US dollars per ounce in December.

Even with the sharp increase, platinum remained relatively attractive compared with gold, encouraging jewellery manufacturers to increase purchases. Demand rose by around 10 percent year-on-year to 2.214 million ounces, reaching its highest level in eight years.

Silver Prices Climbed, but Manufacturing Demand Softened

Silver also posted substantial gains during 2025, with spot prices increasing from 29 US dollars per ounce in January to 74.8 US dollars per ounce by December.

However, jewellery manufacturers reduced silver purchases by 8 percent, with total demand falling to 189 million ounces. The report said exporters were affected by both higher silver prices and United States tariff measures.

2026 Outlook: Volatility Likely to Continue

Looking ahead, the report suggests that the West Asia crisis, elevated energy prices and the effects of tariffs are likely to keep precious metals markets volatile during 2026 while encouraging cautious consumer spending, Ms. Banerjee wrote.

At the same time, precious metals are expected to retain their importance as stores of value and portfolio diversification assets.

The report also highlights that greater attention will be placed on supply chain transparency, traceability and environmental, social and governance (ESG) standards, making responsible sourcing an increasingly important factor for both competitiveness and consumer confidence.

FAQ’s

1. What is the focus of CIBJO’s latest Special Report?

The report reviews developments in the precious metals market during 2025 and examines how record-high prices affected jewellery demand, manufacturing trends and consumer purchasing behaviour ahead of the 2026 CIBJO Congress.

2. How did higher precious metal prices affect jewellery demand?

According to the report, jewellery purchase volumes declined in many markets because of higher prices, but the overall value of jewellery purchases increased, indicating continued consumer demand despite changing buying patterns.

3. Why did platinum jewellery demand increase?

Although platinum prices rose sharply, the report says the metal remained relatively attractive compared with gold, encouraging jewellery manufacturers to increase platinum purchases and helping demand reach an eight-year high.

4. What happened to silver jewellery demand in 2025?

Silver prices increased significantly during the year, but jewellery manufacturers reduced silver purchases by 8 percent. The report attributes the decline to higher prices and the impact of United States tariffs on exporters.

5. What does the report expect for the precious metals market in 2026?

The report expects geopolitical tensions, higher energy costs and tariff-related pressures to keep markets volatile. It also predicts that responsible sourcing, supply chain transparency and ESG practices will become increasingly important for the jewellery industry.

India’s silver imports plunged 87% year-on-year in May 2026 as stricter government regulations, higher import duties, and authorization requirements disrupted supply chains. Despite strong domestic demand, silver inflows fell sharply to their lowest level since February 2023, highlighting the significant impact of trade and foreign exchange management policies.

India Silver Imports: In a dramatic shift for the precious metals market, India’s appetite for silver has hit a severe regulatory wall. Despite an enduring and robust domestic demand for the white metal, a stringent wave of inbound trade policies has effectively choked off the inbound supply chain. Recent trade data reveals that India’s silver imports have crashed by a staggering 87%, underscoring the profound impact of the government’s latest financial tightening and import curbs.

Check the latest rates for gold and silver—across MCX, international markets, the bullion market, and your city—on our new website: https://goldpricetodaynews.com/

The massive decline marks one of the sharpest contractions in recent commodity trading history. It highlights an emerging disconnect in the Indian market: while local consumers and industrial buyers remain eager to purchase silver, actual physical availability from overseas has slowed to a crawl due to aggressive regulatory roadblocks.

Market Overview and Policy Impact

India’s silver imports plunged 87% year-on-year in May 2026 to 75.57 dollar million from 566.22 dollar million a year earlier, following tighter government restrictions on precious metal imports. In volume terms, imports dropped 94% to just 33 metric tons, the lowest level since February 2023.

The government restricted imports of silver in nearly all forms during May and later expanded the curbs to include silver grain and powder, requiring prior import authorization. Additionally, import duties on gold and silver were raised to 15% from 6% to reduce pressure on foreign exchange reserves amid elevated oil prices. Despite the recent decline, India imported a record 12 billion dollar worth of silver during FY2025-26, compared with 4.8 billion dollar in the previous year.

Import Curbs Choke Supply Chains

The primary catalyst behind the 87% plunge is a series of targeted policy interventions aimed at managing foreign exchange volatility and narrowing the national trade deficit. By tightening import restrictions and altering tariff structures, regulatory bodies have successfully curbed massive capital outflows. However, these same measures have paralyzed standard supply routes for bullion dealers and industrial manufacturers who rely heavily on steady silver inflows.

FAQ’s

1. Why did India’s silver imports fall by 87% in May 2026?
India’s silver imports declined primarily due to tighter government restrictions on precious metal imports, including stricter authorization requirements and higher import duties aimed at controlling foreign exchange outflows and reducing the trade deficit.

2. How much silver did India import in May 2026?
India imported silver worth 75.57 million dollar in May 2026, down from 566.22 million dollar a year earlier. Import volumes also dropped 94% to just 33 metric tons, the lowest level since February 2023.

3. What new restrictions were imposed on silver imports?
The government expanded import curbs to cover nearly all forms of silver, including silver grain and powder. Importers are now required to obtain prior authorization before bringing these products into the country.

4. How have higher import duties affected the silver market?
Import duties on gold and silver were increased from 6% to 15%, making imports more expensive and reducing inbound shipments. The move was designed to protect foreign exchange reserves amid elevated global oil prices.

5. What could the decline in silver imports mean for India’s bullion market?
The sharp reduction in imports could lead to tighter domestic supply, higher premiums, and increased challenges for bullion dealers, jewellers, and industrial users who depend on a steady flow of imported silver to meet demand.

In a major move, MCX will officially launch a 100-gram silver futures contract on June 1, 2026 (Monday). Dubbed SILVER100, this mini-contract breaks down the entry barrier for retail participants, offering a highly liquid, lower-margin alternative to the massive, standard silver contracts that usually dominate the exchange.

Whether you are a seasonal trader or a retail investor looking to hedge your portfolio, here is everything you want to know about this new product launch.

Contract Overview, Timeline, and Specifications

The newly introduced contract is designed to bring structured transparency to smaller-scale commodity investments.

Symbol & Identification: The contract will appear on trading screens as SILVER100. Its specific monthly contracts will follow the format SILVER100MMYY (e.g., the launch contract will be labeled SILVER100JUN26).

Available Horizons: Upon its June 1 rollout, trading will be available across distinct monthly cycles spanning from June 2026 through November 2026.

Trading Calendar: The contract follows a standard Monday-to-Friday schedule. Daily trading hours run from 09:00 AM to 11:30 PM / 11:55 PM (adjusting periodically in accordance with international Daylight Saving Time shifts).

Launch & Expiry Logic: The contract goes live on the first working day of the launch month and expires on the very last calendar day of the designated expiry month.

Core Trading Mechanics: Units, Value, and Margins

To ensure seamless execution, MCX has established a clear transactional architecture for the 100-gram units:

Trading & Delivery Unit: 1 Lot = 100 grams of silver.

Price Base & Quotation: While you trade a 100g lot, the screen quotation reflects the value of 10 grams of silver, linked to the Ex-Ahmedabad basis. This price includes import and customs duties but excludes local taxes like GST, Cess, or Octroi.

Tick Size: The minimum price movement (tick size) is Rs 1 per 10 grams.

Maximum Order Cap: Traders can place a single maximum order of up to 600 kilograms.

The Margin Requirements:

To initiate a position, traders must maintain specific capital requirements in their accounts:

Initial Margin: A minimum of 10% or as calculated by SPAN software (whichever is higher).

Extreme Loss Margin (ELM): Safetied at a fixed minimum of 1%.

Special/Additional Margins: MCX retains the right to levy extra margins on buyers, sellers, or both during patches of sudden, extreme market volatility.

Understanding the Daily Price Limits (Circuit Filters)

To protect market participants against sudden flash crashes or speculative spikes, MCX has implemented a dynamic, multi-tier circuit breaker system:

Step 1: The initial circuit limit is set at 4%. If breached, it automatically expands to 6% without halting trade.

Step 2: If prices touch the 6% mark, a 15-minute cooling-off period is triggered. Post-break, the limit widens to 9%.

International Adjustments: In case of unprecedented volatility in overseas markets, the limit can be expanded further past 9% in successive steps of 3%.

Quality Standards and Delivery Rules (MANDATORY)

Unlike cash-settled derivatives, the SILVER100 contract operates on a Compulsory Physical Delivery mechanism. Once the contract expires, positions cannot be cash-settled; physical bullion must change hands.

Purity & Grade: Delivered silver must strictly meet Grade 999 and Fineness 999 standards (as per IS 2112:1981). There is zero negative tolerance; anything below 999 purity will face immediate rejection.

Approved Suppliers: Silver bars must be serially numbered and sourced exclusively from London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) approved refiners or MCX-accredited domestic suppliers.

Staggered Delivery Period: The final 3 trading days of an expiring month constitute the staggered delivery window. Traders holding open positions during this time can explicitly submit their intentions to give or receive physical metal.

Allocation Method: Delivery matches are made via a automated Random Method (lottery system) to give equal opportunity to all sizes of buyers, though preference may be granted to those who proactively opted for physical pickup.

Financial Pay-in & Defaults: Funds must be cleared on a T+1 working day basis. Buyers cannot refuse an allocation once assigned. If a seller fails to deliver physical silver on time, severe Seller Default Penalties are strictly enforced by the clearing corporation.

FAQ’s

1. What is the MCX SILVER100 contract?
SILVER100 is a new 100-gram silver futures contract launched by MCX to provide retail investors and small traders with an affordable way to participate in silver trading with lower margin requirements.

2. When will the SILVER100 contract be launched?
The MCX SILVER100 contract will be officially launched on June 1, 2026, and will initially include monthly contracts from June 2026 to November 2026.

3. What is the trading unit of this new silver contract?
The trading unit for SILVER100 is 100 grams per lot. Although trading is based on 100 grams, prices are quoted per 10 grams of silver.

4. Does SILVER100 involve physical delivery?
Yes, SILVER100 is a compulsory physical delivery contract. At expiry, traders must take or give actual silver meeting 999 purity standards as per MCX rules.

5. What are the key benefits of this new MCX silver contract?
The main benefits include lower investment size, improved liquidity, retail-friendly margins, structured risk management, and easier access to silver trading for small investors.

Silver Import Policy Change: In a major regulatory crackdown aimed at curbing a massive surge in inbound shipments and safeguarding the nation’s foreign exchange reserves, the Government of India has taken a stringent policy measure. On Saturday, the government modified the import policy for silver, shifting it from the “Free” category to the “Restricted” category with immediate effect. Under the newly implemented guidelines, no corporate or bullion dealer will be permitted to import silver into the country without a valid government authorization or specific license. The primary theme behind this sudden decision is the critical need to preserve US dollar reserves for essential commodities like crude oil and fertilizers. This drastic policy pivot follows a jaw-dropping 157% year-on-year spike in silver imports recorded in April. It comes just three days after the government aggressively hiked the import duty on both gold and silver from 6% to 15%.

According to market experts, while this move strengthens national balance sheets, it is bound to trigger severe physical shortages and skyrocketing premiums in the domestic bullion market, making silver significantly more expensive for the common man in the coming days.

DGFT Notification: Specific HS Codes Hit by the Ban

According to the official notification issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), which functions under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the import policy update targets precise categories:

The policy revision applies directly to ITC HS Codes 71069221 and 71069229.

These specific codes primarily cover bullion-grade silver and silver bars with a purity level of 99.9% or higher.

Effective immediately from Saturday, any domestic enterprise or bullion dealer seeking to bring these silver bars into India must mandate a special license from the government.

The Driving Force: Why Was the Government Forced to Act?

The government’s growing anxieties stem from record-breaking inward shipments of both gold and silver over the past fiscal cycle, which threatened the country’s trade balance.

Annual Import Statistics (FY2026)

Gold Imports: Increased by 24.08% to touch 71.98 billion dollar in FY2026.

Silver Imports: Witnessed a massive 149.48% explosion, skyrocketing to 12.05 billion dollar.

Shocking Monthly Import Growth (In INR)

Imports in April 2025: Rs 1,367.67 crore

Imports in April 2026: Rs 3,845.51 crore

Percentage Spike: A massive 181.17% growth in rupee terms.

In terms of value, silver imports in March 2026 had already leaped by 416.73% to 616.44 million dollar (approx. Rs 5,718 crore), compared to a mere 119.30 million dollar (approx. Rs 1,033 crore) in March 2025. This parabolic trajectory left the government with no choice but to intervene.

Domain Impact: How the Restrictions Will Affect Key Sectors

India relies heavily on overseas markets, importing over 80% of its total silver requirement. The country consumes roughly 6,000 to 7,000 tonnes of silver annually, representing 20-25% of global consumption. Consequently, this policy shift will have widespread structural repercussions across various sectors:

1. Impact on Commodity Exchanges (MCX) and Short Sellers

Delivery Pressure on Short Sellers: Market participants who have shorted silver contracts on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) without holding underlying physical stock face immense pressure.

Three Options for Traders: Short sellers are now left with three choices: deliver physical silver, cut their positions at a loss, or engage in aggressive short-covering (buying back contracts) in the open market. This is expected to trigger intense short-term volatility on the exchange.

Buyers are Safe: Investors holding long positions (who have already bought silver) face no immediate adverse threat.

2. Impact on the International Markets (COMEX)

This major regulatory shift by the world’s second-largest consumer is likely to damp global sentiment. As Indian demand cools down temporarily due to licensing delays, international silver prices on COMEX could witness a mild correction. This could create a wide arbitrage gap (Arb Gap) between MCX and COMEX prices.

3. Crisis for Silver ETFs (Exchange Traded Funds)

Silver ETF fund houses are structurally mandated to hold physical silver in exact proportion to the units they sell to investors. With the import pipeline restricted, these asset management companies will face severe supply bottlenecks in procuring deliverable physical silver, making it difficult to accept new investments.

4. Impact on Bullion Dealers and Jewelers

For everyday bullion dealers, securing silver will become a tedious, bureaucratic process involving extensive paperwork. The resultant supply crunch will allow dealers who possess existing stockpiles to command hefty cash premiums. They will either sell at these higher premiums or hoard inventory in anticipation of further domestic price rallies.

Impact on the Common Man: Will Silver Prices Soar?

The combination of a 15% custom duty and severe domestic supply constraints means that buying silver items will become an expensive affair for retail consumers. The price of silver jewelry, utensils, and artifacts will surge heavily as manufacturing jewelers pass the higher physical premiums directly onto end buyers.

Expert’s Opinion

Market analysts and commodity experts emphasize that this policy shift will create a bifurcated market scenario: domestic physical silver premiums will shoot up substantially, while international spot prices may soften due to a pause in Indian institutional buying. Investors and traders should brace themselves for intense, news-driven volatility in the domestic market over the short term.

FAQ’s

1. Why has India restricted silver imports?
The Indian government restricted silver imports to curb the sharp rise in inbound shipments and protect the country’s foreign exchange reserves. Officials are concerned about the growing import bill and its impact on the trade balance, especially after silver imports recorded massive year-on-year growth.

2. What changes have been made under the new silver import policy?
Under the revised policy, silver imports have been moved from the “Free” category to the “Restricted” category. Importers, bullion dealers, and companies now require special government authorization or licenses to import bullion-grade silver covered under specific HS codes.

3. Which silver products are affected by the restrictions?
The policy specifically targets silver imports under ITC HS Codes 71069221 and 71069229. These categories mainly include bullion-grade silver bars and silver with purity levels of 99.9% or higher.

4. How will the new policy impact India’s bullion market?
Experts believe the restrictions could create physical silver shortages in the domestic market. This may lead to higher premiums, increased volatility on exchanges like MCX, and rising prices for silver jewelry, utensils, and investment products across India.

5. What impact will the policy have on traders, ETFs, and consumers?
Short sellers on MCX may face delivery pressure, while Silver ETFs could struggle to procure physical silver due to supply constraints. Retail consumers are also likely to pay significantly higher prices for silver products because of import restrictions and increased customs duties.

The declining global reserve share of the U.S. dollar is raising concerns about the future of the international monetary system. As confidence in fiat currencies weakens, central banks are rapidly increasing gold purchases. Analysts believe gold and silver could benefit significantly from any long-term shift away from dollar dominance worldwide.

US Dollar Reserve Status: For over eight decades, the U.S. dollar has reigned as the undisputed anchor of global trade, but a recurring historical pattern suggests that this era of dominance may be approaching a dramatic conclusion. As the greenback’s share of global foreign exchange reserves continues its steady decline, investors are increasingly asking: What happens to gold and silver when the dollar loses its reserve status? History indicates that such transitions are rarely subtle; they represent massive shifts in global economic power, often resulting in a profound migration of capital toward “hard money” assets that carry no counterparty risk.

A System Under Strain: The Erosion of Fiat Trust

The current global monetary architecture, established in 1944 and severed from gold in 1971, is well past the typical 30-to-40-year lifespan of modern currency systems. Today, the “dollar standard” faces structural fragility that is increasingly visible to institutional players:

Declining Reserves: The dollar’s share of global reserves has drifted from a 72% peak in 2001 to approximately 57% today.

The Fiat Domino Effect: Because major currencies like the Euro and Yen are backed by the same government promises as the dollar, a crisis in the world’s primary reserve currency often triggers a global crisis of confidence in all paper money.

Central Bank Accumulation: Realizing the shift, central banks have purchased over 1,000 tonnes of gold annually for three consecutive years (2022–2024), double the pace of the previous decade.

Why Precious Metals Become the New Anchor

When a reserve currency fails, capital does not simply vanish—it seeks a safe haven that cannot be printed or devalued by any single government. Gold and silver have outlasted every monetary transition in human history.

Gold: The Ultimate Monetary Anchor

In a transition away from the dollar, gold serves a dual purpose. It benefits directly from a weakening dollar (since gold is priced in USD), but more importantly, it offers the only liquid, universally recognized asset capable of anchoring a new monetary system. A 2025 survey revealed that 95% of central banks expect global gold reserves to continue increasing over the next 12 months.

Silver: The Crisis Amplifier

Silver often acts as a high-beta version of gold during monetary stress. During the stagflation of the 1970s—the last major era of dollar instability—silver surged from under 2 dollar to nearly 50 dollar per ounce. Its dual role as both a monetary asset and a critical industrial metal provides a unique demand profile that can accelerate gains during a flight to safety.

Historical Lessons: From Sterling to the Dollar

The transition away from a dominant currency is rarely overnight. When the British pound lost its status after 1945, the process took nearly thirty years, punctuated by devaluations and a 1976 IMF bailout. However, the current shift is structurally different: unlike previous transitions that moved between gold-linked currencies, we are now moving away from a system backed by nothing but government promises.

The Investor’s Window of Opportunity

History shows that the greatest benefits go to those who position themselves before a crisis becomes front-page news. As the 2026 economic landscape shifts, the accumulation of physical bullion represents more than just a hedge—it is an insurance policy against the structural reorganization of the global financial order.

FAQ’s

1. Why is the U.S. dollar’s reserve currency status being questioned?
The U.S. dollar’s share of global foreign exchange reserves has declined from nearly 72% in 2001 to around 57% today. Rising debt levels, inflation concerns, and growing geopolitical tensions have increased doubts about the long-term stability of the current dollar-based monetary system.

2. Why are central banks buying large amounts of gold?
Central banks are increasing gold reserves because gold is considered a safe-haven asset that carries no counterparty risk. Unlike paper currencies, gold cannot be printed or controlled by any single government, making it attractive during periods of economic uncertainty and currency instability.

3. How could gold benefit if the dollar weakens further?
Gold typically gains when the U.S. dollar weakens because it is priced in dollars globally. In times of monetary uncertainty, investors often move capital into gold as a store of value, which can increase demand and push prices higher.

4. Why is silver considered important during monetary crises?
Silver acts as both a precious metal and an industrial commodity, giving it a unique demand profile. Historically, silver has shown stronger percentage gains during periods of inflation and economic instability, especially when investors seek alternatives to traditional currencies.

5. What historical examples show reserve currency transitions?
One major example is the decline of the British pound after World War II, when the U.S. dollar gradually replaced it as the world’s dominant reserve currency. Experts note that such transitions usually take years and are often accompanied by economic uncertainty, inflation, and shifts toward hard assets like gold.

Precious Metals: In a startling shift for the American economy, “Precious Metals” have officially become the top export of the United States, surpassing traditional giants like energy, agriculture, and aerospace. As of the first quarter of 2026, gold, silver, and platinum shipments have surged to account for nearly 15% of all U.S. goods exported, a massive jump from the historical average of just 4%. This “hockey stick” growth in metal transfers suggests a global movement of physical wealth, as international investors and central banks pull bullion from U.S. vaults amid shifting economic landscapes and rising commodity prices.

The Great Bullion Outflow: Analyzing the Numbers

Recent trade data reveals that the 6.2% growth in total American exports for 2025 was not driven by factory goods or agricultural surplus, but by the physical relocation of metal.

The Surge: Precious metals’ share of exports rose from roughly 4.3% in 2025 to 12.7% in the first two months of 2026, eventually hitting 15% by March.

Physical Volume: Last year alone, approximately 260 tons of gold, 17 tons of platinum, and significant quantities of silver were shipped from U.S. vaults under Wall Street to hubs in London, Zurich, and Hong Kong.

Comparison: By February 2026, precious metal exports reached 29.4 billion dollar, overshadowing Energy (25.2 billion dollar) and Agriculture (14.7 billion dollar).

Top U.S. Goods Exports (February 2026)

Precious Metals (Gold, Silver, Platinum): 29.4 Billion Dollar

Energy Products: 25.2 Billion Dollar

Chemicals (Non-Pharma): 16.0 Billion Dollar

Agriculture: 14.7 Billion Dollar

Airplanes: 12.2 Billion Dollar

Why Is the Gold Leaving?

Record-High Prices: The valuation of gold and platinum has reached historic peaks, making existing holdings more valuable in trade statistics.

Repatriation: Foreign central banks are increasingly “repatriating” their assets, moving physical gold back to their own borders rather than keeping it in U.S. custody.

Financial Hedging: Global investors are increasingly betting on precious metals as a safer alternative to the dollar or traditional stocks during periods of geopolitical and economic uncertainty.

Trade Balance and Economic Reality

While total exports rose to over 3.4 trillion dollar, the data presents a complex picture of the U.S. trade balance. Despite the high value of gold leaving the country, the trade deficit has not seen a “dramatic” reduction.

Imports on the Rise: Total U.S. imports actually rose from 4.1 trillion dollar to 4.3 trillion dollar.

The Deficit: The 2025 trade deficit for goods alone actually increased by 2.0%, indicating that the surge in gold exports is barely offsetting the high volume of incoming foreign goods.

The Outlook for U.S. Reserves

Despite the high volume of exports from private and foreign-owned vaults on Wall Street, the U.S. government’s official reserves remain untouched. The United States still holds 8,133 tons of gold in federal depositories like Fort Knox. Furthermore, geological estimates suggest that at least 15,000 tons of gold remain untapped underground within U.S. territories.

As precious metals continue to dominate the trade ledger, the trend underscores a significant shift in how the world perceives the U.S. dollar and the security of American financial institutions in 2026.

FAQ’s

1. Why have precious metals become the top U.S. export in 2026?
Precious metals exports surged due to record-high gold and silver prices, growing global demand for safe-haven assets, and increased physical bullion transfers by investors and central banks. Gold, silver, and platinum shipments now account for nearly 15% of total U.S. goods exports.

2. Which precious metals are driving the export boom?
The main contributors are gold, silver, and platinum. Gold remains the largest component, while platinum and silver demand have also increased because of industrial use, investment demand, and global economic uncertainty.

3. Why are foreign investors and central banks moving gold out of the U.S.?
Many foreign institutions are repatriating gold reserves to their home countries for greater financial security and direct control over physical assets. Investors are also increasing holdings in precious metals as protection against inflation, geopolitical tensions, and currency volatility.

4. Has the rise in gold exports improved the U.S. trade deficit?
Despite strong growth in precious metal exports, the U.S. trade deficit has not improved significantly because imports also increased sharply. Rising imports of foreign goods continue to offset gains from bullion exports.

5. Are U.S. government gold reserves being reduced?
No. The large bullion exports mainly involve private and foreign-owned holdings stored in U.S. vaults. Official U.S. government reserves, including the gold held at Fort Knox, remain unchanged at approximately 8,133 tons.
