The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) raised its benchmark repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% on October 7, 2026, marking its first rate hike in nearly four years. The decision, which was widely anticipated, has put fresh pressure on domestic gold prices and could keep silver volatile as investors assess higher yields and currency movements.

Check out the latest Gold, Silver prices in MCX, International Market, Sarafa and your city on https://goldpricetodaynews.com/

RBI Repo Rate Hike: Key Highlights

The RBI increased the repo rate from 5.25% to 5.50% on Wednesday, October 7, with all six members of the Monetary Policy Committee supporting the decision.

More importantly for financial markets, the central bank shifted its policy stance from “neutral” to “calibrated tightening”. This indicates that further rate increases remain possible, although RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said the timing and extent of future hikes would depend on actual inflation and economic growth.

RBI Raises Inflation Forecast

The RBI has raised its inflation forecast to 5.2% from 5% earlier. Its core inflation projection has also increased to 4.4% from 4.3%.

Governor Sanjay Malhotra said:

“The Indian economy has been strong, and economic momentum remains broad based,”

He also indicated that the inflation outlook had worsened since the previous policy meeting.

RBI Rate Hike Puts Gold Prices Under Pressure

Gold prices came under pressure after the RBI’s decision as investors assessed the implications of higher domestic interest rates and yields.

Gold is already around 1% lower over the week from approximately 4,168 dollars at the end of September. The metal remains close to its seven-week low of 4,110.55 dollars, recorded on September 28.

Gold is also around 26% below its January 28 record high of 5,589 dollars, suggesting that a considerable part of the recent interest-rate adjustment may already have been reflected in prices.

The bigger question now is whether the RBI’s move will lead to another decline or whether gold’s next direction will depend more heavily on US interest rates, real yields, the dollar, crude oil and geopolitical developments.

How Will the RBI Rate Hike Affect Gold and Silver?

Higher domestic interest rates and bond yields can increase the opportunity cost of holding precious metals because gold and silver do not provide regular interest income.

Impact on Gold

A stronger rupee following the RBI’s rate hike could create additional pressure on domestic gold prices if international prices remain unchanged.

The rupee’s roughly 6% decline this year had provided an additional boost to Indian gold returns. If the currency stabilises, some of that support could disappear.

Impact on Silver

Silver could also remain volatile in the current environment. Higher interest rates can weigh on precious metals, while silver’s substantial industrial use means its performance is also closely linked to economic growth, manufacturing activity and global commodity trends.

A stronger dollar, high crude oil prices and elevated global yields could add pressure, although inflation and geopolitical uncertainty may continue to support safe-haven demand.

Does an RBI Rate Hike Automatically Mean Gold Prices Will Fall?

Not necessarily.

Harshal Dasani, business head, INVAsset PMS, said:

“Gold does not trade simply on the policy rate.”

According to Dasani, real yields, the dollar and the reason behind a rate hike are more important factors for determining gold’s direction.

The recent US rate cycle provides an example. The Fed’s September 16 rate hike was followed by a gold sell-off of more than 6% from around 4,490 dollars. However, gold gained 2.5% the following day as yields declined and oil prices eased.

The 2022 US rate-hike cycle also demonstrates that higher interest rates do not automatically result in falling gold prices. The Federal Reserve increased rates by 425 basis points that year, yet gold finished the year roughly flat as inflation was rising almost as quickly as interest rates.

Why the RBI Rate Hike Matters for Indian Gold Prices

The repo rate now stands at 5.50%, while the 10-year government bond yield is near 7.2%. Rising domestic yields increase the opportunity cost of holding an asset such as gold that does not generate interest income.

The rupee is another important factor.

A rate increase that supports the Indian currency could put additional pressure on domestic gold prices even if international gold prices remain unchanged. Therefore, Indian investors need to track both international gold prices and the rupee-dollar exchange rate.

RBI’s “Calibrated Tightening” Stance Changes Gold Outlook

The 25-basis-point hike was largely expected, with 60% of economists polled by Reuters forecasting such an increase. However, the more significant development was the RBI’s change in policy stance.

The central bank moved from “neutral” to “calibrated tightening”, while four of six MPC members voted in favour of the new stance. The RBI also indicated that rate cuts are not expected in the near term, with future decisions dependent on changing economic conditions.

Inflation remains an important part of the equation. Headline inflation reached 4.82% in August, remaining above the RBI’s 4% target for three consecutive months.

This creates a mixed environment for gold: higher rates and yields can weigh on the metal, while persistent inflation and geopolitical uncertainty can support demand for it as a hedge.

Strong Economic Growth Gives RBI Room to Raise Rates

The RBI’s decision comes amid resilient economic growth. The central bank now expects GDP growth for the current financial year at 7.1%, 40 basis points higher than its earlier projection.

GDP growth during the April-June quarter stood at 7.8%, exceeding the RBI’s earlier 7% forecast.

Governor Malhotra said:

“in view of strong growth in monetary and credit aggregates.”

The RBI’s data also showed bank credit growth accelerating, with growth reaching 18.8% in October.

RBI Keeps Focus on Liquidity Management

The central bank did not announce additional measures such as an increase in the reserve ratio to absorb surplus liquidity from the banking system.

Governor Malhotra said:

“The Reserve Bank will use an appropriate mix of liquidity management tools,”

The RBI has so far used bond sales and longer-term foreign-exchange swaps to manage liquidity.

Krishna Bhimavarapu, Asia Pacific economist at State Street Investment Management in Bengaluru, said:

“The RBI has taken a sensible first step with a 25-bps hike, our base case remains for 100 bps of cumulative tightening over this cycle,”

He added:

“The ultimate magnitude will depend on how the global energy shock, food inflation broader inflation dynamics and the global tightening cycle evolve in the coming quarters,”

Experts Share Their Views on Gold Prices

Chokkalingam G, Founder of Equinomics Research Pvt Ltd, said the relationship between domestic interest rates and gold prices is relatively weak.

He said domestic gold prices are primarily influenced by international gold prices and the rupee exchange rate, while global gold prices are strongly affected by interest-rate cycles in the US and Europe. He expects further weakness in global gold prices if Western economies remain in an interest-rate upcycle.

Kranthi Bathini, Director of Equity Strategy at WealthMills Securities, said the strengthening dollar and elevated crude oil prices are currently creating pressure on gold in the short to medium term.

He added that higher interest rates could keep gold prices stable, while recent supply-related news from Russia has created another source of pressure.

US Fed Remains Crucial for Gold’s Next Move

For international gold investors, the US Federal Reserve remains more important than the RBI alone. Gold prices slipped as markets awaited the minutes of the Fed’s September 15-16 meeting for clues about future rate increases.

Markets were pricing an 85% probability of a December rate hike, while softer economic data had reduced expectations of an October move.

Therefore, US real yields and the dollar remain two of the most important indicators for gold investors in the near term.

Gold Price Outlook: Key Levels to Watch

Gold has already undergone a significant correction from its January 28 record of 5,589 dollars.

Dasani identifies 4,110 dollars as an important technical level. A sustained close below this level could potentially open the way towards the 4,000-dollar zone, while the January record remains a major resistance level.

For Indian buyers and investors, however, international prices are only one part of the equation. Movements in the rupee-dollar exchange rate will also influence domestic gold prices.

What Could Happen to Silver Prices After the RBI Hike?

Silver could experience short-term pressure from higher interest rates, particularly if domestic and global yields remain elevated.

However, silver differs from gold because of its major industrial applications. Manufacturing activity, economic growth and broader commodity-market conditions can influence silver prices alongside monetary policy.

A stronger rupee could limit the domestic impact of a decline in international silver prices. At the same time, inflation, geopolitical uncertainty and industrial demand could offer some support.

As a result, silver may remain more volatile than gold, and the RBI’s 25-basis-point rate increase alone is unlikely to determine its next major move.

Should Investors Buy or Sell Gold After the RBI Rate Hike?

The latest RBI decision does not necessarily mean investors should completely exit gold.

Dasani believes investment strategy should not change simply because interest rates have increased; instead, position sizing and entry discipline should receive greater attention.

For investors maintaining a strategic gold allocation, a fixed allocation may be preferable to chasing rallies or making aggressive directional bets.

Fresh investments could be staggered through different tranches during meaningful corrections rather than being made after sharp price increases.

Silver may warrant a different approach because of its higher volatility and wider price movements. The key signal for a more constructive gold outlook, according to Dasani, would be a point when the Fed’s dot plot stops rising, suggesting that real yields may have reached their peak.

Bottom Line: RBI Rate Hike Is Only One Factor for Gold and Silver

The RBI’s 25 bps repo rate hike to 5.50% increases the opportunity cost of holding gold in India, particularly if domestic yields remain high and the rupee stabilises. Gold has already come under pressure, while silver could remain volatile.

However, the RBI decision alone will not determine the future direction of precious metals. US interest rates, real yields, the dollar, crude oil, geopolitical risks, global economic conditions and the rupee will remain critical factors.

For investors, the latest rate hike may be a reason to reassess gold and silver exposure and entry levels rather than automatically abandon precious metals. With gold already around 26% below its January peak and close to the 4,110-dollar support zone, disciplined position sizing and staggered buying may remain important considerations.

FAQ’s

1. What is the new RBI repo rate after the October 7, 2026 decision?

The RBI increased the benchmark repo rate by 25 basis points, from 5.25% to 5.50%, on October 7, 2026. The decision was unanimously supported by all six members of the Monetary Policy Committee and marked the RBI’s first rate hike in nearly four years.

2. How can the RBI repo rate hike affect gold prices in India?

Higher domestic interest rates and bond yields can increase the opportunity cost of holding gold because the metal does not provide regular interest income. A stronger rupee following the rate hike could also put additional pressure on domestic gold prices if international gold prices remain unchanged.

3. Will silver prices also be affected by the RBI rate hike?

Silver could face short-term pressure from higher interest rates and yields. However, its substantial industrial use means that manufacturing activity, economic growth and global commodity trends are also important. Inflation, geopolitical uncertainty and industrial demand could provide some support, making silver potentially more volatile than gold.

4. Does a rate hike automatically mean gold prices will decline?

No. Gold does not respond solely to changes in the policy rate. Real yields, the US dollar and the reason behind the rate hike can be more influential. Historical examples cited in the source show that gold can sometimes rise even after a rate increase when yields or other market conditions move in its favour.

5. Which factors should investors watch for gold and silver prices now?

Investors should monitor US interest rates, real yields, the dollar, crude oil prices, geopolitical developments, global economic conditions and the rupee-dollar exchange rate. For Indian investors, movements in the rupee are particularly relevant because currency changes can significantly influence the domestic prices of internationally traded precious metals.

India’s foreign exchange reserves posted a strong weekly increase during the week ended July 3, 2026, supported by gains in foreign currency assets and gold reserves. Fresh data released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) showed that the country’s overall reserve position strengthened across all major components.

Check out the latest Gold, Silver prices in MCX, International Market, Sarafa and your city on our new website– https://goldpricetodaynews.com/

The latest figures indicate that India’s foreign exchange reserves rose by 7.26 billion US dollars, taking the total reserve stock to 674.19 billion US dollars.

Foreign Currency Assets Lead Weekly Increase

The largest share of India’s foreign exchange reserves, Foreign Currency Assets (FCA), recorded the biggest weekly gain.

FCA increased by 4.51 billion US dollars during the reporting week, reaching 545.58 billion US dollars. The rise in foreign currency assets accounted for a significant portion of the overall increase in the country’s reserves.

Gold Reserves Register Strong Growth

India’s gold reserves also recorded a notable increase during the week.

According to RBI data, gold holdings rose by 2.67 billion US dollars, lifting the total value of gold reserves to 105.21 billion US dollars. The increase highlights gold’s continued importance as a strategic reserve asset within India’s foreign exchange portfolio.

SDRs and IMF Reserve Position Also Improved

Other components of India’s reserve assets also registered modest gains.

Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) increased by 65 million US dollars to 18.62 billion US dollars.

India’s Reserve Position in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) rose by 15 million US dollars, reaching 4.79 billion US dollars.

The weekly data showed positive growth across every major component of India’s foreign exchange reserves.

Reserves Remain Below March 2026 Levels

Despite the strong weekly improvement, India’s total foreign exchange reserves remain below the levels recorded at the end of March 2026.

Compared with the end of March:

Total forex reserves are lower by 16.92 billion US dollars.

Foreign Currency Assets have declined by 6.71 billion US dollars.

Gold reserves are down by 10.19 billion US dollars.

This indicates that while reserves have recovered in recent weeks, they have not yet fully regained earlier levels.

Year-on-Year Comparison

On an annual basis, India’s foreign exchange reserves remain 25.54 billion US dollars lower than a year ago.

However, gold reserves have continued to strengthen over the same period, increasing by approximately 20.36 billion US dollars, reflecting the growing role of gold in India’s reserve management strategy despite fluctuations in overall forex holdings.

What the Latest RBI Data Indicates

The latest RBI figures suggest that India’s external financial position strengthened during the reporting week, supported by higher foreign currency assets and an increase in gold reserves.

While overall reserves remain below earlier highs, continued gains in gold holdings underline the RBI’s focus on maintaining a diversified reserve portfolio amid evolving global economic and financial conditions.

Key Highlights

India’s forex reserves increased by 7.26 billion US dollars during the week ended July 3, 2026.

Total foreign exchange reserves reached 674.19 billion US dollars.

Foreign Currency Assets rose by 4.51 billion US dollars to 545.58 billion US dollars.

Gold reserves increased by 2.67 billion US dollars, reaching 105.21 billion US dollars.

SDRs climbed to 18.62 billion US dollars, while the IMF reserve position rose to 4.79 billion US dollars.

Despite the weekly rise, total reserves remain below both March 2026 and year-ago levels.

FAQ’s

1. How much did India’s forex reserves increase during the week ended July 3, 2026?

India’s foreign exchange reserves increased by 7.26 billion US dollars, taking the country’s total reserves to 674.19 billion US dollars, according to the latest Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data.

2. What contributed to the rise in India’s forex reserves?

The increase was mainly driven by a 4.51 billion US dollar rise in Foreign Currency Assets and a 2.67 billion US dollar increase in gold reserves. Smaller gains were also recorded in Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) and India’s IMF reserve position.

3. How much are India’s gold reserves worth now?

As of the week ended July 3, 2026, India’s gold reserves were valued at 105.21 billion US dollars, following a weekly increase of 2.67 billion US dollars, according to RBI figures.

4. Are India’s forex reserves higher than earlier this year?

No. Despite the latest weekly increase, India’s total foreign exchange reserves remain 16.92 billion US dollars lower than the levels recorded at the end of March 2026.

5. Why are forex reserves important for India’s economy?

Foreign exchange reserves help maintain currency stability, support international trade, meet external payment obligations, strengthen investor confidence, and provide a financial buffer during periods of global economic uncertainty or market volatility.

RBI Gold Sale News: Amid global economic uncertainties and rising tensions between the United States and Iran, several media reports citing a Bloomberg Economics assessment have claimed that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) sold 12 billion dollar worth of gold from its reserves in May 2026 to support the Indian rupee. However, soon after these reports surfaced, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) categorically rejected the claim and described it as completely false, baseless, and misleading.

In an official press release issued on June 3, 2026, the RBI clarified that India’s gold reserves remain fully intact and secure.

Key Highlights and Important Details

Below are the major points based on official statements and data released by the RBI and the Press Information Bureau (PIB):

Misleading Claim Circulated Online: Several social media posts and media platforms, citing a Bloomberg Economics assessment, claimed that the RBI had sold a significant quantity of gold to maintain liquidity in India’s foreign exchange reserves amid the Iran-US conflict and rising crude oil prices.

Fact Check Rejects the Claim: The PIB Fact Check has labelled the entire claim as FAKE. The RBI has also clarified that reports suggesting the central bank sold gold reserves are completely incorrect and do not reflect the actual position of India’s reserve holdings.

Gold Share in Foreign Exchange Reserves Has Increased

According to official RBI data, the share of gold in India’s foreign exchange reserves has been steadily rising:

At the end of September 2025: 13.92%

As of March 31, 2026: 16.70%

As of May 22, 2026: Increased further to 16.85%

These figures indicate that the proportion of gold in India’s reserve portfolio has grown rather than declined.

RBI Statement on Reports of Gold Sale

The Reserve Bank of India stated:

“The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has taken note of certain reports appearing in sections of the media claiming that the RBI has sold gold. The RBI clarifies that these reports are not correct.

Information regarding the RBI’s physical gold stock is published every month in its Monthly Bulletin. The latest edition is available on the RBI website:
https://www.rbi.org.in/Scripts/BS_ViewBulletin.aspx?Id=24213”

RBI Gold Holdings Remain Unchanged

According to the RBI, its physical gold stock continues to remain unchanged at 880.52 tonnes. The central bank has confirmed that there has been no reduction in its gold reserves and that reports claiming otherwise are inaccurate.

Public Advisory

In light of the misinformation circulating online and on certain media platforms, the RBI has advised the public to rely only on official information released by the central bank from time to time. Investors and citizens are encouraged to verify such claims through RBI publications and official government fact-checking channels before accepting or sharing them.

FAQ’s

1. Did the RBI sell 12 billion dollar worth of gold in May 2026?
No. The RBI has officially denied reports claiming it sold 12 billion dollar worth of gold from its reserves. The central bank described such reports as false, misleading, and without factual basis.

2. What did the RBI say about the gold sale reports?
In its June 3, 2026 press release, the RBI clarified that media reports suggesting it had sold gold reserves were incorrect. It reaffirmed that India’s gold reserves remain secure and unchanged.

3. How much gold does the RBI currently hold?
According to the RBI, its physical gold stock remains unchanged at 880.52 tonnes. The central bank confirmed that there has been no reduction in its gold holdings despite claims circulating online.

4. Has the share of gold in India’s foreign exchange reserves increased?
Yes. Official RBI data shows that gold’s share in India’s foreign exchange reserves increased from 13.92% in September 2025 to 16.70% in March 2026, and further to 16.85% by May 22, 2026.

5. How can investors verify RBI gold reserve information?
Investors and the general public should rely on official RBI publications, including the RBI Monthly Bulletin and government fact-checking channels such as PIB Fact Check. These sources provide verified and updated information regarding India’s gold reserves and foreign exchange holdings.

(Key Highlights)

(Liability)

RBI Gold Repatriation: In a significant move towards financial sovereignty and national security, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has successfully repatriated another 104.2 metric tonnes of gold from overseas vaults to domestic soil. This massive shift, executed between September 2025 and March 2026, marks a strategic pivot in how India manages its sovereign wealth amid rising global geopolitical uncertainties.

Strengthening Domestic Reserves

The RBI’s latest data reveals a decisive trend of bringing physical gold back to Indian shores. By shifting reserves from international hubs like London and New York, India is ensuring its assets remain under its direct control.

Domestic Surge: India’s gold held within the country has jumped from 575.8 tonnes to 680 tonnes.

Reduced Overseas Exposure: Gold stored with the Bank of England and the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has dropped from 290.4 tonnes to 197.7 tonnes.

Currently, over 65% of India’s total gold reserves are now securely stored within the nation’s own vaults, a stark contrast to previous decades when the majority was held abroad.

Gold as a Shield for the Economy

While the physical quantity of gold saw a marginal increase, the monetary value of these reserves has witnessed an extraordinary surge due to soaring global gold prices.

Compared to September 2025, India’s gold reserves saw a marginal increase by March 2026. The total quantity rose from 880.2 tonnes to 880.5 tonnes, marking a gain of 0.3 tonnes. Meanwhile, the total value jumped significantly from 97.4 billion dollar to 115.4 billion dollar, an increase of 18 billion dollar. Additionally, gold’s share in forex reserves increased from 13.9% to 16.7%, reflecting a rise of 2.8%.

This increase highlights gold’s role as a critical hedge, now accounting for nearly 17% of India’s total Foreign Exchange Reserves, providing a robust cushion against currency volatility.

Security, Sovereignty, and Sanction-Proofing

The decision to bring gold home is not just about logistics; it is a calculated geopolitical strategy. Following the footsteps of other major central banks, the RBI is prioritizing “Self-Reliance” (Atmanirbharta) over reliance on global financial hubs.

Why is the RBI bringing gold back?

Geopolitical Tensions: Ongoing conflicts and shifting alliances have made central banks wary of keeping assets in foreign jurisdictions.

Protection Against Sanctions: The freezing of foreign reserves seen in recent global conflicts has served as a wake-up call. By holding gold domestically, India ensures its assets cannot be blocked or seized by Western sanctions.

Crisis Management: In the event of a global financial meltdown, having physical gold within the country allows the government immediate and total control over its most liquid asset.

Since 2023, the RBI has repatriated approximately 280 tonnes of gold, signaling that the era of keeping India’s “Family Jewels” in London is rapidly coming to an end.

FAQ’s

1. Why is the RBI bringing gold back to India?
The RBI is repatriating gold to strengthen financial sovereignty, reduce dependence on foreign vaults, and protect assets from geopolitical risks and potential sanctions.

2. How much gold has RBI recently repatriated?
Between September 2025 and March 2026, the RBI brought back 104.2 metric tonnes of gold to India.

3. How has India’s gold reserve distribution changed?
Gold held domestically increased from 575.8 tonnes to 680 tonnes, while overseas holdings declined significantly, with over 65% now stored within India.

4. What impact has this had on the value of gold reserves?
Although the quantity saw a small increase, the total value jumped by $18 billion due to rising global gold prices, strengthening India’s forex reserves.

5. How does this move benefit India’s economy?
Holding gold domestically improves crisis management, ensures liquidity during emergencies, and acts as a hedge against currency volatility, enhancing overall economic stability.

RBI Gold Buying, Central Bank Gold Buying: India’s Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has emerged as the top gold buyer globally in 2024, achieving a significant milestone in October with record purchases.

According to Marissa Salim, Senior Research Lead for APAC at the World Gold Council, central bank gold demand remained robust, with year-to-date (y-t-d) buying reaching 694 tonnes by Q3 2024. October alone doubled the 12-month average, with RBI leading the charge, adding 27 tonnes during the month and bringing its total y-t-d purchases to 77 tonnes—a fivefold increase compared to 2023.

For Expert Views on Gold and Silver Prices Watch Our Youtube Channel- (10 Million Views)

October’s Record-Breaking Gold Buying
Globally, central banks reported 60 tonnes of net purchases in October, marking the highest monthly total for 2024. The RBI led with 27 tonnes added to its reserves, followed by Turkey (17 tonnes) and Poland (8 tonnes). Other notable buyers included Kazakhstan, which added 4 tonnes after months of net selling, and Kyrgyzstan, with 2 tonnes added.

Emerging Markets Dominate Gold Buying
Emerging markets continue to dominate the gold-buying landscape. Turkey added 72 tonnes y-t-d, accounting for 34% of its total reserves, while Poland followed closely with 69 tonnes y-t-d, making up 17% of its reserves. The National Bank of Kazakhstan, after five months of selling, recorded a net y-t-d reduction of 4 tonnes despite its recent additions. Ghana’s reserves also rose steadily, reaching 28 tonnes, with a further 1 tonne added in October.

India Gold Demand, RBI gold reserve: India’s gold market has seen a 12% year-to-date increase in global and domestic gold prices. However, demand softened following Akshaya Tritiya, and the gap between domestic and international gold prices has narrowed. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has added 30.6 tonnes to its reserves this year, reaching a record high of 834.2 tonnes. Positive flows into gold ETFs resumed in May, and gold imports increased consistently.

Kavita Chacko, Research Head, India, World Gold Council, says, “We anticipate that jewellery demand will predominantly centre around the festival season starting in the latter half of Q3. Interest in bars and coins is expected to continue.”

Gold prices hit a new all-time high in mid-May before pulling back due to profit-taking, ending the month at $2,343 per ounce—a 1% monthly rise. This added to gains of 9% in March and 5% in April. Prices further dipped to $2,317 per ounce in early June following a robust U.S. jobs report and a pause in gold purchases by the People’s Bank of China (PBoC). Despite these fluctuations, gold remains one of the best-performing assets this year, with a 12% return. Indian gold prices have mirrored international trends, supported by the stable USD/INR exchange rate.

The Akshaya Tritiya festival on May 10, traditionally a significant day for gold purchases, saw a brief surge in demand. However, gold buying, especially for jewellery, declined afterward, mirroring the tepid demand in March and April due to high prices. The record-high prices in mid-May further suppressed demand during the typical low season from mid-May to July. Nonetheless, there were reports of continued interest in bars and coins, fueled by positive investor sentiment towards gold as a valuable investment.

Kavita Chacko adds, “The current trend of subdued jewellery demand is expected to continue over the next few months with a potential uptick anticipated during the onset of the festival season in the latter half of Q3. Conversations with the industry suggest that manufacturers are choosing not to increase their inventories at this time but could build stock as early as August, with activity picking up steam as the quarter progresses. But investment buying through bars and coins is likely to persist in line with the current trend: from January to March, bar and coin demand rose by 19% year-on-year to 41 tonnes.”

The discount on domestic gold prices relative to international prices has reduced from $24 per ounce in March and $10 per ounce in April to $6 per ounce by mid-June. This decrease in the discount, even after Akshaya Tritiya, indicates ongoing interest in gold buying during what is typically a low-demand period.

Indian gold ETFs experienced a significant turnaround in May, with net inflows reaching INR 8 billion, a sharp contrast to the INR 4 billion outflows from the previous month and well above the 12-month average of INR 4 billion. This increase brought collective gold holdings to 46 tonnes, marking a monthly increase of 1 tonne and an annual rise of 8 tonnes. Additionally, the number of gold ETF folios grew by 136,772, reaching a total of 5.3 million, indicating sustained investor interest in gold as a financial asset.

The RBI’s gold purchasing activity has remained consistent throughout the year. According to RBI data and our estimates, the central bank acquired 3.7 tonnes of gold in May and an additional 2.8 tonnes in the first week of June, bringing the total gold purchases in 2024 to 30.6 tonnes. This has elevated the RBI’s gold holdings to a new high of 834.2 tonnes, which now constitutes 8.7% of the total forex reserves, a level not seen since April 2013.

Kavita Chacko, Research Head, India, World Gold Council, notes, “The RBI has emerged as a significant contributor to global central bank gold purchases this year, following Turkey and China. If the trend of gold buying seen in the first five months of the year continues, the RBI’s annual gold acquisitions could be comparable with the (net) 77.5 tonnes bought in 2021. However, the next few months will provide a clearer picture of the bank’s buying trend.”

Chacko further explains, “Alongside building its reserves, the RBI has been restructuring the storage of gold over recent years. According to its report on foreign exchange reserves, the central bank has been bringing some of its gold previously held overseas to India. This move appears to be motivated by logistical as well as strategic considerations and does not have financial implications, nor does it affect the RBI’s overall gold reserves. Furthermore, the government has granted the RBI an exemption from customs duty on gold imports.”

Despite high gold prices, May continued the positive trend from April with gold import values reaching $3.3 billion, representing a 7% month-on-month increase but a 10% decrease year-on-year. In volume terms, it is estimated that gold imports in May were around 45 tonnes, up from 43 tonnes in April but significantly lower than the 63 tonnes imported in May 2023 when prices were 20% lower.

RBI Gold Reserve, World Gold Council: The Reserve Bank of India has temporarily ceased accumulating gold reserves, as reported in the gold market update by Kavita Chacko, Head of Research at the World Gold Council. This decision comes amidst fluctuating gold prices, impacting India's gold market dynamics.

Gold Price, World Gold Council, India Gold Market, RBI Gold Reserve: In the latest update on India’s gold market, Kavita Chacko, the Head of Research at the World Gold Council, noted that the surge in gold prices since early October has tempered demand in the fourth quarter. The LBMA Gold Price PM rose by 11% to US$2,032/oz, and the Indian gold price increased by a similar margin (up 11% to Rs54,233/10g) during this period.

Chacko’s research attributes the rise in gold prices to factors such as a decline in bond yields, expectations of an easier monetary policy, geopolitical tensions, and weakness in the US dollar. However, the impact of these factors varied across currencies, with the Indian gold price influenced by the stable domestic currency.

Indian gold ETFs continue to attract sustained inflows, reflecting growing investor interest supported by strong price performance. In contrast, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has paused its gold purchases in November after being a net buyer for eight of the first eleven months in 2023, adding 16.2t to its gold holdings.

Kavita said ”RBI data and our estimates indicate that the central bank did not purchase gold in November,15 the first pause in six months. During eight of the first eleven months of 2023, the RBI has been a net buyer of gold, adding a total of 16.2t to its gold holdings. This is however notably lower demand than previous years. Annual net gold purchases by the RBI averaged 47t from 2018 to 2022.16 The central bank’s gold reserves as at the end of November are estimated to be 803.6t. During 2023, it has been buying an average 1.5t of gold per month.”

Despite India’s robust economic growth driven by healthy consumption demand and government investment, the high gold prices have affected the domestic gold market. Anecdotal evidence indicates lower purchases during the busy wedding season, with jewelry sales volumes taking a hit. The high gold prices have also limited jewelers’ appetite to build inventories, leading to increased jewelry recycling and potentially curbing imports.

Chacko highlighted that the World Gold Council’s econometric analysis shows that over the long term, income and price are the main drivers of gold demand in India. Rising income positively correlates with gold demand, while higher prices have a dampening effect. Looking ahead, jewelry demand may struggle to rebound in the current high-price environment, but investment demand is expected to receive a boost from favorable domestic economic growth prospects.

High gold prices and soft demand have reduced the volume of gold imports, despite a 35% increase in import value. Cumulative imports for the first ten months of 2023 were 2% higher y/y in volume but 12% higher in value, mainly due to the 15% y/y increase in prices. Monthly import volumes fluctuated, with a notable increase in Q3 attributed to the festive season.

Kavita said ”Looking ahead, jewellery demand may find it difficult to rebound while the high price environment remains. At the same time, investment demand for gold is likely to get a boost, supported by the favourable domestic economic growth prospects and the trend of growing domestic investment inflows amidst the prevailing global geo-political and economic uncertainty.”

As of late October 2023, domestic gold prices in India have been trading at a discount to international prices, reflecting subdued local demand. Despite the steep discount, the demand scenario remains muted, with physical demand impacted not only in India but also in other regions, such as China, where premiums have narrowed from previous highs.
