With this update, 9K gold, which denotes a purity of 375 parts per thousand, joins the list of officially recognised and hallmarkable gold purities. Until now, hallmarking was available for purities ranging from 14K to 24K, but the growing demand for lower-carat, affordable jewellery has prompted the regulatory change.

The updated list of hallmarking grades now includes:

• 24KS (995)
• 23K (958)
• 22K (916)
• 20K (833)
• 18K (750)
• 14K (585)
• 9K (375)

This decision is particularly relevant at a time when gold prices have crossed ₹1 lakh per 10 grams, pushing affordability out of reach for many buyers. The inclusion of 9K jewellery is expected to provide some relief to budget-conscious consumers. However, traditional buyers may still prefer higher purity ornaments for their inherent gold value and resale advantages.

The India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA) welcomed the move, stating:

“Glad to note that BIS has accepted the IBJA request to include 9 kt also for gold hallmarking. BIS has now published the amendment to IS 1417:2016, adding 9 Kt into the 9 permitted karatages. However, IBJA is coordinating with BIS to incorporate 9K hallmarking in BIS Manak so that it is immediately possible for hallmarking agencies to hallmark 9K for jewellers.”

The All India Gem and Jewellery Domestic Council (GJC) also issued an advisory to jewellers:

“As per BIS Amendment No. 2 dated July 2025 to IS 1417:2016, 9 Karat gold (minimum fineness 375 ppt) has been officially included under mandatory hallmarking. All jewellers and hallmarking centres must ensure compliance with this new requirement.”

Relief Amid Soaring Gold Prices

With gold prices crossing ₹1 lakh per 10 grams, the inclusion of 9K gold — typically more affordable — may offer relief to cost-sensitive consumers. Over the years, price-sensitive buying patterns have shifted preferences from traditional 22KT gold to 18KT and 14KT. The addition of 9KT provides another option, particularly for lightweight fashion jewellery.

India, the world’s second-largest gold consumer, demands between 700 to 1,000 tonnes of gold annually. As demand diversifies, jewellers are adapting by offering more karatage options to cater to various price points and customer needs.

BIS Expands Hallmarking Network

The new 9K category joins the BIS hallmarking ecosystem that has already seen rapid expansion under its HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification) system. Since its launch, over 40 crore gold jewellery items have been hallmarked. The number of registered jewellers has surged from 34,647 to 1,94,039, and the Assaying and Hallmarking Centres (AHCs) have increased from 945 to 1,622.

BIS CARE App Empowers Consumers

Consumers can verify hallmark details through the BIS CARE app, which provides:

• Jeweller’s registration information
• Assaying and hallmarking centre details
• Type of article, hallmarking date, and metal purity
• Facility to file quality-related complaints or report misuse of BIS marks

The BIS CARE app is available on the Play Store, enabling greater transparency and consumer protection in the gold jewellery sector.

With 9K gold now officially recognised, the industry expects a new segment of jewellery products to enter the market, offering more variety and affordability to Indian consumers.

Manoj Jain, Director of Commodity and Currency in Prithvi Finmart says gold prices hit one year high in the international markets and life-time high in the domestic markets. Silver prices also gained following gold and hit 69,000 levels in the domestic markets. Gold and silver showed very high price volatility due to banking crisis in the U.S. and Europe, weakness in the dollar index, sharp fall in the U.S. bond yields, heavy sell-off in the global equity markets and recession fears.

Gold and silver showed profit taking from their highs ahead of the Fed meeting outcomes but overall long-term trend intact bullish for precious metals. 2 days Federal Reserve meeting on interest rates is starting from today. If the Fed holds interest rates unchanged could further support bullion prices in the international markets.

According to Jain gold and silver prices to remain volatile this week and gold could hold $1922 and silver also holds $21.50 per troy ounce levels. Gold has support at $1966-1950, while resistance at $2000-2015 per troy ounce. Silver has support at $22.30-21.88, while resistance is at $22.90-23.34 per troy ounce

Kedia Advisory says traders are now pricing in a 49% chance of the Fed holding rates in the current range. Risk aversion gripped financial markets despite global central banks announcing measures to provide dollar liquidity in a bid to stem fallout from panic in the banking sector. Similarly, concerns mounted about the health of the global financial system despite UBS Group AG, Switzerland’s largest banking group, agreeing to buy the crisis-hit Credit Suisse Group AG in a historic, government-brokered dea.

Jain said at MCX, gold is having support at 59220-58950 and resistance at 59800-60000 while silver is having support at 68200-67750 and resistance at 69350-69800. He suggest buying silver on dips around 68400 with a stop loss of 67750 for the target of 69,500 and wait for some corrective dips in gold for initiating fresh positions.

Manoj Jain, Director of Commodity and Currency in Prithvi Finmart says gold and silver slipped from five-week highs registered on Thursday in the international markets after the European Central Bank hikes interest by 50 basis points to 3.50%. The ECB increased interest rates despite the banking crisis. The U.S. unemployment claims also fell last week to 1,92,000 against expectations of 2,05,000 claims. The U.S. building permits also increased to 1.52 million units against expectations of 1.34 million units while housing starts increased to 1.45 million units against expectations of 1.32 million units.

Upbeat U.S. data and increasing interest rates by the ECB triggered profit taking in gold and silver. However, the U.S. Philly Fed manufacturing index contracted 23.2 against expectation of a negative reading of 14.7. Downbeat manufacturing data and profit taking in the dollar index supported gold and silver prices at lower levels.

Jain expect gold and silver prices to remain volatile ahead of the next week’s U.S. Fed policy meetings and gold could hold its support level of $1884 and silver could also hold $21 per troy ounce levels. Gold has support at $1910-1896, while resistance at $1934-1945 per troy ounce. Silver has support at $21.34-21.00, while resistance is at $21.88-22.20 per troy ounce.

According to Jain at MCX, gold is having support at 57770-57550 and resistance at 58280-58500 while silver is having support at 66000-65550 and resistance at 67100-67750. He suggest buying silver around 66200 with a stop loss of 65650 for the target of 67200.

Jain said The dollar index was firm due to weakness in the Euro and other major global currencies but bond yields crashed once again and also supported precious metals. The U.S. economic data released on Wednesday was also lower than expected and supportive for bullions.
