Driven by a monumental 19-month sovereign buying streak by the People’s Bank of China (PBoC) and surging retail demand for physical bullion, China’s gold imports have skyrocketed by 76% in the first five months of 2026, solidifying the nation’s aggressive strategic accumulation of the safe-haven asset.

Check out the latest Gold, Silver prices in MCX, International Market, Sarafa and your city on our new website– https://goldpricetodaynews.com/

In a massive display of macroeconomic positioning, China’s appetite for gold has reached historic highs in early 2026. Data reveals that the nation imported a staggering 163 tonnes of gold in May alone—marking the largest single-month haul since March 2024. This aggressive accumulation comes as the People’s Bank of China (PBoC) extended its official gold-buying streak to an incredible 19 consecutive months, establishing a powerful structural floor for global bullion prices.

Key Import and Reserve Data for 2026

The scale of China’s recent gold rush is underscored by consistent month-on-month growth and record-breaking central bank reserves:

Three-Month High Watermark: May represented the third consecutive month where Chinese gold imports comfortably crossed the 150-tonne threshold.

Year-to-Date Surge: Cumulative imports for the first five months of 2026 have reached 692 tonnes, a massive 76% increase compared to the same period in 2025.

Record Sovereign Reserves: The PBoC single-handedly added 10 tonnes to its official coffers in May, pushing China’s total sovereign gold holdings to a record 2,331 tonnes.

Retail Demand Drivers

While central bank accumulation heavily dictates the macro trend, domestic consumer behavior is significantly amplifying the influx. The primary catalysts behind the 76% import spike include:

Broad retail demand for physical bullion bars.

Growing public participation in low-cost gold accumulation plans.

Market Context: This sustained sovereign and retail rush into gold highlights its dominance as a premier store-of-value asset. It stands in stark contrast to competing digital assets like Bitcoin, which faced severe downward pressure during the same period, shedding 18.11% over 30 days to trade near 60,063.84 dollar.

FAQ’s

Q1. What is driving the sharp rise in China’s gold imports in 2026?
The surge is primarily driven by sustained buying from the People’s Bank of China alongside strong domestic retail demand for physical bullion. Investors and consumers are increasingly turning to gold as a long-term store of value amid global economic uncertainty.

Q2. How much gold did China import in May 2026?
China imported approximately 163 tonnes of gold in May 2026 alone, marking the highest monthly level since March 2024 and reflecting consistently strong demand from both institutional and retail segments.

Q3. What is the total gold import volume for China in 2026 so far?
During the first five months of 2026, China’s cumulative gold imports reached around 692 tonnes, representing a 76% increase compared to the same period in 2025.

Q4. How are China’s official gold reserves changing?
The People’s Bank of China added about 10 tonnes of gold in May 2026, bringing total official reserves to a record level of approximately 2,331 tonnes, reinforcing its long-term diversification strategy.

Q5. Why is retail demand for gold increasing in China?
Retail demand is rising due to growing interest in physical bullion, accessible accumulation plans, and increasing preference for tangible assets as protection against inflation, currency volatility, and broader financial market uncertainty.

In a swift and sharp reaction to recent government policy measures, India’s gold imports have plummeted by roughly 70%, dropping to just 25-30 tonnes over the past month. This significant decline follows the Centre’s decision to more than double the customs duty on the yellow metal. The strategic move aims to curb the outflow of foreign exchange and prioritize essential economic imports amid growing geopolitical uncertainties.

Check out the latest Gold, Silver prices in MCX, International Market, Sarafa and your city on our new website– https://goldpricetodaynews.com/

The Impact of the May Duty Hike

Effective May 13, the import duty on gold and silver was hiked from 6% to 15%. Prior to this revision, India was importing between 75 and 100 tonnes of gold per month. According to official sources, the sudden policy shift has successfully compressed import volumes to nearly a third of their previous levels.

However, while the physical volume of gold entering the country has shrunk dramatically, the financial cost has moved in the opposite direction. Driven by rallying global prices for the precious metal, India saw its gold import bill increase in value.

mport Volume (Previous Average): 75–100 tonnes per month

Import Volume (Current Data – Post-Hike): 25–30 tonnes per month

May Import Value: 3.41 billion Dollar (up 34% YoY)

Customs Duty (Previous): 6%

Customs Duty (Current – Post-Hike): 15%

Why the Government Stepped In

India remains the world’s second-largest consumer of gold, trailing only China, with demand overwhelmingly driven by the domestic jewellery industry. Because the country mines very little of its own gold, these purchases account for over 5% of India’s total imports, resulting in a massive outflow of foreign exchange.

The aggressive duty hike aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent call for citizens to adopt austerity measures and curb avoidable gold purchases. With ongoing tensions and uncertainties in West Asia threatening to inflate India’s overall import bill, the government is strictly prioritizing its foreign exchange reserves. The focus is now on securing essential imports that directly sustain economic activity and food security, such as:

Crude oil

Fertilisers

Industrial raw materials

Capital goods

Broader Financial Year Trends

The recent drop in volume comes on the heels of a record-breaking financial year for gold values.

During the previous fiscal year (FY26), the total value of gold imports hit an all-time high of 71.98 billion dollar, representing a 24% increase, even as the actual physical volume dipped slightly by 4.76% to 721.03 tonnes. This trend of high valuations carried into the new fiscal year, with imports surging by 60.14% to reach 9.04 billion dollar during the April-May FY27 period alone.

By stepping in with a 15% duty, policymakers are attempting to break this cycle, ensuring that surging global gold prices do not disproportionately drain the nation’s economic resources.

FAQ’s

1. Why have India’s gold imports fallen sharply?
India’s gold imports dropped by around 70% after the government raised customs duty on gold and silver from 6% to 15%. The higher duty increased import costs, reducing demand and import volumes significantly.

2. How much gold was India importing before and after the duty hike?
Before the duty increase, India imported approximately 75-100 tonnes of gold per month. Following the hike, monthly imports have fallen to around 25-30 tonnes.

3. Why did the government increase customs duty on gold?
The government raised the duty to reduce foreign exchange outflows, control non-essential imports, and ensure that foreign currency reserves are available for critical imports such as crude oil, fertilizers, industrial raw materials, and capital goods.

4. Did the value of gold imports also decline?
No. Despite lower import volumes, the value of gold imports increased due to higher international gold prices. India’s gold import bill reached 3.41 billion dollar in May, marking a 34% year-on-year increase.

5. What were the broader gold import trends in the previous financial year?
In FY26, India’s gold import value reached a record 71.98 billion dollar, up 24% from the previous year. However, the physical volume of imports declined by 4.76% to 721.03 tonnes, reflecting the impact of rising global gold prices.

India gold import duty: In a strategic move to safeguard its foreign exchange reserves, the Indian government has introduced a 100-kilogram ceiling on duty-free gold imports for jewellery exporters, signaling a significant tightening of the nation’s precious metal trade regulations.

The new mandate, issued on Thursday, modifies the Advance Authorisation Scheme, which previously allowed manufacturers to import gold without duty for export purposes. By capping imports per licence and introducing rigorous oversight, New Delhi aims to temper the appetite for the world’s second-largest gold consumer market while managing economic pressures from volatile global oil prices.

Tighter Reins on Jewellery Exporters

The revised framework shifts the focus from volume to accountability. Under the new rules, future import licences are no longer guaranteed; they are now strictly linked to performance, requiring exporters to fulfill at least 50% of their existing export obligations before new shipments are cleared.

For new players entering the market, the barrier to entry has become significantly steeper:

Mandatory Physical Inspections: Regional authorities will now conduct on-site audits of manufacturing facilities for first-time applicants to verify production capacity and operational status.

Fortnightly Compliance: Licence holders are required to submit reports every two weeks, certified by an independent chartered accountant, detailing every gram of gold imported and exported under the scheme.

The Economic Backdrop: Forex and Fiscal Pressure

This regulatory squeeze follows a sharp hike in import tariffs earlier this week, where the government raised duties on gold and silver to 15% (up from 6%). This fiscal lever is designed to reduce overseas purchases that drain foreign exchange reserves, especially as the cost of energy imports remains high.

Industry Impact and Market Performance

While the government prioritizes fiscal stability, the industry warns of a potential chilling effect on trade. A Mumbai-based exporter noted that the “excessive compliance requirements” could lead to a decline in jewellery exports, despite the sector’s strong performance in the previous year.

According to data from the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council, India’s gold jewellery exports—spanning both plain and studded segments—reached a robust 11.36 billion dollar in the 2025/26 fiscal year.

As these new barriers take effect, the industry must now navigate a landscape where the cost of doing business is measured not just in bullion prices, but in the weight of regulatory paperwork.

Key Highlights at a Glance

Regulation: New compliance framework introduced for bullion import/export licences

Import Cap: Maximum 100 kg import allowed per licence

Licence Renewal: Minimum 50% fulfilment of previous export obligations required

New Applicants: Mandatory physical facility inspections before approval

Reporting Requirement: Fortnightly certified audits by a Chartered Accountant compulsory

Standard Duty: Import duty on gold and silver recently increased to 15%

FAQ’s

1. Why has India imposed a 100 kg cap on duty-free gold imports?
India introduced the cap to reduce excessive gold imports, protect foreign exchange reserves, and manage economic pressures caused by rising global oil prices and higher import bills.

2. What changes have been made to the Advance Authorisation Scheme?
Under the revised scheme, jewellery exporters can import a maximum of 100 kg of gold per licence, and future licences will only be granted after meeting at least 50% of existing export obligations.

3. What new compliance rules must exporters follow?
Exporters are now required to submit fortnightly reports certified by a Chartered Accountant detailing gold imports and exports. First-time applicants must also undergo physical inspections of their manufacturing facilities.

4. How much is the current import duty on gold and silver in India?
The Indian government recently increased the standard import duty on gold and silver to 15%, up from the earlier 6%, to discourage excessive imports.

5. How could these new regulations impact the jewellery industry?
Industry experts believe the stricter compliance requirements and higher duties could increase operational costs and potentially slow jewellery exports, despite India recording strong export performance in the 2025/26 fiscal year.

DGFT Public Notice: In a move to streamline precious metal trade, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has officially updated the list of banking institutions authorized to import bullion into India. Under the new notification, 17 lenders have been cleared to handle imports starting April 1, 2026, with the authorization remaining valid until March 31, 2029.

The update, issued via Public Notice No. 4/2026-27, amends Appendix 4B of the Handbook of Procedures, 2023. This regulatory clarification follows recent reports of logistics bottlenecks where bullion consignments were reportedly held at customs pending this formal government notification.

The DGFT has categorized the authorized banks into two distinct groups based on their permitted import scope:

Dual-Metal Authorization (Gold & Silver)

A total of 15 banks have been granted permission to import both gold and silver. This list includes major public and private sector players:

Public Sector: State Bank of India (SBI), Bank of India, Indian Overseas Bank, and Punjab National Bank.

Private Sector: Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, IndusInd Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Yes Bank, Federal Bank, Karur Vysya Bank, and RBL Bank.

Foreign Entities: Deutsche Bank and Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC).

Gold-Only Authorization

Two specific lenders have been restricted to the import of gold only:

Union Bank of India

SBER Bank

Regulatory Context

The decision was made by the Director General of Foreign Trade, Lav Agarwal, utilizing powers conferred under the Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) 2023.

“In exercise of the powers conferred under paragraph 1.03 & 2.04 of the Foreign Trade Policy, the Director General of Foreign Trade hereby makes the following amendments, for the period valid up to 31.03.2029,” the notice stated.

Why This Matters

The timely issuance of this list is critical for India’s jewelry and bullion industry. Previous delays in these notifications have historically led to “pauses” in import orders, affecting local premiums and supply chains. By providing a clear three-year window (2026–2029), the government aims to provide long-term stability for the banks and the markets they serve.

The new list ensures that the flow of precious metals into one of the world’s largest consuming nations remains uninterrupted by administrative hurdles.

FAQ’s

1. What has the DGFT announced in the latest update?
The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has revised its list of banking institutions authorized to import bullion, officially permitting 17 banks to handle gold and silver imports into India. This authorization will be effective from April 1, 2026, and remain valid until March 31, 2029, ensuring a structured framework for precious metal imports.

2. How many banks have been approved and which metals can they import?
A total of 17 banks have been approved under the new notification. Out of these, 15 banks are allowed to import both gold and silver, while 2 banks have been restricted to importing only gold, based on DGFT’s classification of import permissions.

3. Why was this DGFT notification issued?
The notification was issued to streamline the import process of bullion and resolve operational issues at customs. In recent months, bullion consignments faced delays due to the absence of updated authorization lists, which led to temporary bottlenecks in the supply chain.

4. What is the duration of this new authorization?
The authorization granted to the 17 banks will be valid for a three-year period, starting from April 1, 2026, and ending on March 31, 2029. This long-term validity is aimed at providing stability and predictability for banks, importers, and the bullion trade ecosystem.

5. Which regulation was amended for this change?
The DGFT implemented this update through Public Notice No. 4/2026-27, which amends Appendix 4B of the Handbook of Procedures, 2023. The amendment was issued under the powers granted by the Foreign Trade Policy, ensuring legal and procedural clarity for bullion imports.

India’s record gold imports in November, totaling ₹1.25 lakh crore, are under scrutiny due to a potential calculation error.

India Gold Import error: India’s unprecedented gold import figures for November, estimated at ₹1.25 lakh crore with a 337% year-on-year surge, have come under scrutiny, as reports suggest a possible calculation error. According to Bloomberg, discrepancies may have arisen from officials double-counting gold shipments in warehouses following a shift in data reporting methodology introduced in July. This story is first reported by Bloomberg.

The Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCIS) is now re-evaluating the data, with reconciliation efforts underway alongside the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC). CNBC reported via government sources that a detailed examination of November’s import data is in progress.

For Expert Views on Gold and Silver Prices Watch Our Youtube Channel- (10 Million Views)

The industry is abuzz with concerns over a potential 40-ton discrepancy in gold import records, with Bloomberg suggesting that the figures might have been overstated by as much as 50 tons—nearly 30% of the reported total imports for November.

Analysts have raised questions about the spike. “The rise in gold imports this November cannot be explained by festive demand alone and represents a meaningful step up in gold purchases for reasons unclear to us,” noted Nomura Holdings experts Sonal Varma and Aurodeep Nandi in a report following the trade data release.

The surge has also contributed to India’s trade deficit ballooning to $37.8 billion in November, driven by gold imports valued at $14.8 billion compared to $3.44 billion in the same month last year. The reduction of import duties on gold, from 15% to 6% in July, had been expected to stimulate demand, but the sharp rise in November exceeded expectations.

A key factor being examined is the integration of customs data systems. Previously, ‘warehousing’ and ‘ex-bond goods’ entries—typically not considered imports—were handled by SEZ Online, while ‘house consumption’ data, classified as actual imports, was processed by ICEGATE. Since July, ICEGATE has combined these data streams into a unified system, which could have caused the overestimation.

As authorities work to reconcile the data, the investigation is expected to clarify whether the surge reflects genuine market dynamics or a technical anomaly in the reporting system.

Gold Import, Silver Import: In August, India’s gold imports surged to a record $10.06 billion, a dramatic 221.41% increase from July, driven by a customs duty cut and strong festive demand. This figure, approximately ₹82,492 crore at ₹82 per US dollar, is the highest monthly gold import value since March 2021. Silver imports also rose significantly to $1.315 billion, reflecting a 727.06% year-over-year increase, or about ₹10,793 crore.

Gold Import, Silver Import: In August, India imported gold and silver worth a staggering ₹95,439 crore, a substantial figure reflecting the country’s strong demand. The Commerce Ministry’s latest data reveals that gold imports alone surged to a record $10.06 billion (Rs 84401 Cr), driven by a significant reduction in customs duty and robust festive demand. This represents an extraordinary 221.41% increase from July’s $3.13 billion in gold imports, marking the highest monthly value since March 2021, when imports totaled $8.5 billion.

Silver imports also saw a substantial rise, reaching $1.315 billion (Rs 11038 Cr), a 727.06% surge compared to the same month last year. In August, India imported gold valued at ₹84,401 crore and silver worth ₹11,038 crore, bringing the total combined import value to ₹95,439 crore.

In August, India exported Gem and Jewellry worth ₹16,771 crore (approximately $1.99 billion), a decrease of 22.09% compared to the same month last year, when exports totaled ₹21,527.76 crore (about $2.6 billion).

The sharp rise in gold imports is attributed to the government’s decision to cut the total customs duty on gold from 15% to 6%, announced in the 2024-25 Union Budget. Gold doré, an alloy of gold and silver, also saw a reduction in duty from 14.35% to 5.35%. This tax relief, coupled with strong cultural and festive demand for gold, has prompted jewellers to stock up ahead of the upcoming season.

Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal noted, “The rise in gold exports should be viewed in the context of duty reduction and not just from an import perspective. The cut in import duty from 15% to 6% is a key factor driving this rise in exports.” He also highlighted that the duty cut was aimed at curbing smuggling and boosting legal imports.

In comparison, India’s gold imports in June stood at $3.06 billion, showing a steady upward trend as the festive season approaches. Overall, India’s gold imports have risen from $33.6 billion in 2018-2019 to $48.8 billion in 2023-24, reflecting the country’s sustained demand for the precious metal.

Despite this jump in imports, India’s gold imports during the April-July 2024-25 period dipped by 4.23%, totaling $12.64 billion. However, the record August imports contributed to a widening trade deficit of $29.65 billion for the month.

Switzerland remains India’s top source of gold imports, accounting for around 40%, followed by the UAE at 16% and South Africa at 10%. Gold continues to make up over 5% of India’s total imports.

Gold Import, Silver Import: India witnessed a significant decline in gold imports due to a massive price hike in March according to data released by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry. Gold imports plummeted by 53.16% to 12,722 crore rupees (equivalent to $1,532.82 million) in March 2024, compared to 27,162 crore rupees (equivalent to $3,300.86 million) in March 2023.

Conversely, silver imports saw a staggering increase of 1068%, with India importing silver worth 6,777.5 crore rupees (equivalent to $816.59 million) in March 2024, compared to 579.88 crore rupees (equivalent to $70.47 million) in March 2023. Silver prices also saw gains in April.

The gems and jewellery export sector also experienced a downturn, declining by 3.76% in March 2024. India exported gems and jewellery worth 21,738 crore rupees (equivalent to $2,619.12 million) in March 2024, compared to 22,587 crore rupees (equivalent to $2,744.97 million) in March of the previous year.

Geo-political conflicts, a slowdown in global demand, and falling commodity prices impacted India’s foreign trade, resulting in a 3.11% year-on-year decline in goods exports to $437.06 billion in FY24. The figures for MAR’24 are provisional.

However, the trade deficit narrowed by 9.33% to $240.17 billion, attributed to a higher contraction in imports at 5.41% to $677.23 billion. Notable declines in imports were observed in products such as petroleum, coal & coke, pearls, precious and semi-precious stones, transport equipment, and chemicals, according to quick estimates released by the Commerce & Industry Ministry on Monday.

Gold Import, Gold Import March 2024: The surge in gold prices to $2222 in March 2024 has sparked concerns of a substantial decline in India's gold imports for the month. Speculations suggest a potential 90% drop in imports, as reported by Reuters, citing a government official and bank dealers.

Gold Import, Gold Import India, Import Duty: Gold prices soaring to $2222 in March 2024, marking record highs, concerns loom over a potential 90% decline in India’s gold imports for the month. A Reuters report, citing a government official and bank dealers, speculates on the drastic drop in imports.

The sharp rise in gold prices is attributed to market expectations of an imminent rate cut by the US Federal Reserve, with forecasts suggesting a potential reduction of 0.75%. Report said As a result, India’s gold import for March could see a significant downturn to 10-11 metric tons, down from 110 metric tons in February, as per a government official speaking on condition of anonymity.

Join our Facebook group to connect with a network of 75,000 Jewellers

With March still underway, customs clearance data indicates a notable decrease in gold clearance, while two bullion dealers have confirmed significantly reduced imports for the month. The prevailing discount on gold has exceeded $35.

In the Sarafa market, gold prices have surpassed the 68000 mark, dissuading consumers from purchasing gold jewellery at such elevated prices. The existing tax regime imposes an 18% tax on gold, comprising a 15% import duty and 3% GST, prompting industry stakeholders to advocate for duty reduction on various platforms.

Despite the challenging market conditions, hopes remain pinned on the upcoming Akshaya Tritiya and wedding season to buoy the jewellery sector.
