Discussions about a possible reduction in import duty on gold and silver are gaining attention within the precious metals industry. However, as of August 28, 2026, there has been no official confirmation from the Indian government regarding any proposal or decision to reduce the import duty on bullion.

Check out the latest Gold, Silver prices in MCX, International Market, Sarafa and your city on our new website– https://goldpricetodaynews.com/

The possibility of a duty cut is currently being discussed mainly among industry participants and market circles. These discussions have led to speculation about whether the government could consider lowering the import duty to provide some relief to the domestic gold and silver industry.

However, it is important to note that no government statement has been released on the matter. In addition, no government official has publicly indicated that a decision to reduce import duty on gold or silver has been taken or is imminent.

No Official Confirmation on Gold Silver Duty Cut

At present, the reported duty reduction remains an industry-level discussion rather than a confirmed government policy announcement. Market participants may therefore need to wait for an official notification, government statement or other formal communication before treating the development as confirmed.

Any actual change in the import duty structure could have an impact on the domestic precious metals market, including bullion prices, import costs and the broader jewellery industry. However, the potential impact cannot be assessed with certainty until the government provides clarity on whether any duty change is actually being considered.

Industry Awaits Government Clarity

The gold and silver industry is now watching for any official communication from the government. Until such an announcement is made, traders, jewellers and investors should distinguish between market rumours and confirmed policy decisions.

For now, there is no official indication that import duties on gold and silver are being reduced. Any fresh development will depend on a formal government announcement or notification.

What Will Be the Impact on Jewellers?

If the government officially reduces import duty on gold and silver, it could lower the landed cost of bullion for the domestic market. This may provide some relief to jewellers by reducing input costs and potentially improving their margins, depending on how much of the duty benefit is reflected in wholesale and retail prices.

A lower import duty could also influence gold and silver jewellery pricing, potentially supporting consumer demand, especially during the festive and wedding seasons. However, the final impact would depend on the extent of the duty reduction, international precious metal prices, the rupee-dollar exchange rate and domestic demand.

For now, since there is no official confirmation of a duty cut, jewellers should avoid making business decisions based solely on the current market speculation. Any meaningful impact on the jewellery industry can be assessed only after the government announces the details of a formal policy change.

FAQ’s

1. Is the government going to reduce import duty on gold and silver?
As of August 28, 2026, there is no official confirmation that the Indian government has decided to reduce import duty on gold or silver. The possibility is being discussed within industry circles, but no formal announcement or notification has been issued by the government.

2. Where did the discussion about a possible duty cut originate?
The discussion is currently circulating within the precious metals industry and market circles. Industry participants are discussing the possibility of a reduction, but these discussions should not be interpreted as confirmation of a government decision unless supported by an official statement or notification.

3. Has any government official given a statement about reducing gold and silver import duty?
No government official has publicly indicated that a gold or silver import duty reduction is being introduced. There has also been no official government statement confirming that a decision has been made or that a duty cut is imminent.

4. Could a duty cut affect domestic gold and silver prices?
If the government officially reduces import duty, it could affect the cost of imported bullion and potentially influence domestic gold and silver prices. The extent of the impact would depend on the size of the duty change, international prices, currency movements, import costs and market demand.

5. Should traders and investors consider the duty cut reports confirmed?
No. Until the government issues an official announcement or notification, the reports should be considered unconfirmed market and industry speculation. Traders, jewellers and investors should monitor official government communications before making decisions based on expectations of a possible change in gold and silver import duties.

Customs Duty Hike: In a decisive attempt to fortify the national economy against global headwinds, the Indian government has sharply increased the effective import duty on gold and silver to 15%, up from the previous 6%. This aggressive fiscal maneuver, announced on Wednesday, is designed to drastically reduce overseas bullion purchases, thereby easing the immense pressure on India’s foreign exchange reserves and providing much-needed support to the struggling Rupee. As the world’s second-largest consumer of precious metals, India’s move to curb “non-essential” imports signals a prioritized focus on narrowing the widening Current Account Deficit (CAD) amidst a volatile international market.

The New Tax Structure Breakdown

The government has restructured the duty by implementing a combination of basic customs charges and specialized cesses. The effective tax rate of 15% is now composed of:

Basic Customs Duty (BCD): Increased to 10% (up from 6%).

Agriculture Infrastructure and Development Cess (AIDC): An additional 5% levy.

Furthermore, this comes on the heels of a 3% Integrated Goods and Services Tax (IGST) previously levied on imports, which had already seen April bullion imports plummet to near 30-year lows.

Why Now? Protecting the Forex Reserves

The timing of the hike is deeply tied to India’s broader “economic defense” strategy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently issued a public appeal for citizens to avoid gold purchases for at least a year.

Rupee Under Pressure: The Indian Rupee has emerged as one of Asia’s worst-performing currencies in 2026, largely due to high energy costs and global geopolitical friction.

The Investment Surge: Despite high prices, Indian demand for gold—especially for investment—has skyrocketed. Gold ETF inflows surged by 186% in the March quarter as investors sought cover from a volatile domestic equity market.

How the Import Duty Hike Supports India’s Economy

The government’s decision is aimed at strengthening the economy by reducing unnecessary pressure on foreign exchange reserves. Since India imports nearly 88% of its crude oil requirements, lowering gold imports helps conserve valuable dollars for critical purchases like energy supplies.

Lower gold imports can help narrow the Current Account Deficit (CAD), which in turn may provide stability to the Indian rupee and improve the country’s external financial position.

The move is also intended to curb speculative buying and large-scale physical gold accumulation, which often increases import dependence without contributing productively to the economy.

By offering concessional rates for recovery and recycling categories, the policy promotes the reuse of existing gold within the country. This supports domestic refining, recycling industries, and strengthens local value chains instead of relying heavily on fresh imports.

How the Move Could Impact Gold Demand

Gold purchases in India are deeply connected to both tradition and financial security. From weddings and festivals to long-term wealth preservation, gold plays a major role in household spending. The government’s latest approach appears aimed at slowing both investment-driven and non-essential consumption.

Key Concerns include

Revival of Smuggling: With a 15% tax gap, the profit margins for bringing in gold illegally have become highly attractive, potentially undoing the progress made when tariffs were cut in 2024.

Dampened Wedding Season: Gold and silver prices were already at elevated levels; this duty hike is expected to further strain the retail jewelry market during the upcoming festive and wedding seasons.

Shift to “Paper Gold”: Analysts expect a further push toward the Gold Monetization Scheme and Sovereign Gold Bonds as physical metal becomes increasingly expensive.

What Could Happen Next?

More investors may prefer paper gold products such as ETFs and digital gold instead of physical jewellery.

Families could postpone jewellery purchases, especially for non-urgent occasions.

Consumers may increasingly exchange old jewellery for new designs rather than making fresh gold purchases.

Global Context: US Inflation and Iran Conflict

The duty hike also serves as a shield against global macro-volatility. With US inflation hitting 3.8% and the Strait of Hormuz facing disruptions due to the US-Iran conflict, oil prices have surged. Since India meets almost all its gold demand through imports, the government is moving to ensure that precious foreign exchange is preserved for essential energy imports rather than “idle” bullion.

FAQ’s

1. Why has India increased the import duty on gold and silver?
The Indian government raised the effective import duty to 15% to reduce excessive bullion imports, conserve foreign exchange reserves, support the Indian Rupee, and narrow the Current Account Deficit (CAD) during a period of global economic uncertainty and rising oil prices.

2. What is the new tax structure on gold and silver imports?
The revised structure includes a 10% Basic Customs Duty (BCD) and a 5% Agriculture Infrastructure and Development Cess (AIDC). In addition, imports are also subject to a 3% Integrated GST (IGST).

3. How will the duty hike impact Indian consumers?
Higher import duties are expected to increase the domestic prices of gold and silver jewellery. This may discourage non-essential purchases, delay wedding and festive buying, and push consumers toward exchanging old jewellery instead of buying new gold.

4. Could the higher import duty increase gold smuggling in India?
Yes. Analysts warn that a wider price gap caused by the 15% duty could make illegal gold smuggling more profitable, potentially leading to a rise in unofficial imports similar to previous periods of high taxation.

5. What alternatives may investors choose instead of physical gold?
Experts believe investors may increasingly shift toward “paper gold” products such as Gold ETFs, Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGBs), and digital gold platforms, which provide gold exposure without the high costs associated with physical imports and storage.

Budget 2025, Budget News, Budget Gold Import Duty, World Gold Council: The Indian Union Budget 2025 will be presented on Saturday, February 1. Last year, the gold industry received a major boost with a substantial 9% reduction in import duties, which helped curb gold smuggling and strengthen the organized market. However, the World Gold Council (WGC) has warned that any hike in import duties in the upcoming budget could have negative consequences, potentially leading to increased smuggling, higher domestic gold prices, and a setback for the industry.

Gold prices delivered impressive returns last year and have recently crossed the ₹80,000 mark on the domestic MCX exchange, reaching new record highs.

For Expert Views on Gold and Silver Prices Watch Our Youtube Channel- (12 Million Views)

Sachin Jain, Regional CEO, India, World Gold Council, highlighted the importance of a stable policy environment for the gold sector, stating:

“The gold industry contributes 1.3% to India’s GDP and employs approximately 2-3 million people. The government’s decision last July to reduce import duties on gold has significantly had a positive impact on the gold industry. It has reduced unofficial imports, stabilised official channels, and encouraged domestic purchasing of gold. The reduction in taxes on gold has led to a more organised and transparent industry, resulting in a stronger gold market.

Any increase in import duties in upcoming budget may have adverse effects, potentially leading to an increase in smuggling, higher domestic gold prices, and pushing the industry backwards. It is imperative that stakeholders, including government bodies, industry players, and financial institutions, collaborate to sustain this positive momentum. By fostering a synergetic environment, we can ensure that the gold industry continues to thrive, innovate and contribute significantly to the India’s economic development and prosperity. Similar to last decade, we are expecting progressive, people friendly and industry supportive policy announcements.”

Additionally, it’s worth noting that both the commodity and stock markets will remain open for trading on Saturday, February 1, aligning with the budget announcement.

Gold Import, Silver Import: In August, India’s gold imports surged to a record $10.06 billion, a dramatic 221.41% increase from July, driven by a customs duty cut and strong festive demand. This figure, approximately ₹82,492 crore at ₹82 per US dollar, is the highest monthly gold import value since March 2021. Silver imports also rose significantly to $1.315 billion, reflecting a 727.06% year-over-year increase, or about ₹10,793 crore.

Gold Import, Silver Import: In August, India imported gold and silver worth a staggering ₹95,439 crore, a substantial figure reflecting the country’s strong demand. The Commerce Ministry’s latest data reveals that gold imports alone surged to a record $10.06 billion (Rs 84401 Cr), driven by a significant reduction in customs duty and robust festive demand. This represents an extraordinary 221.41% increase from July’s $3.13 billion in gold imports, marking the highest monthly value since March 2021, when imports totaled $8.5 billion.

Silver imports also saw a substantial rise, reaching $1.315 billion (Rs 11038 Cr), a 727.06% surge compared to the same month last year. In August, India imported gold valued at ₹84,401 crore and silver worth ₹11,038 crore, bringing the total combined import value to ₹95,439 crore.

In August, India exported Gem and Jewellry worth ₹16,771 crore (approximately $1.99 billion), a decrease of 22.09% compared to the same month last year, when exports totaled ₹21,527.76 crore (about $2.6 billion).

The sharp rise in gold imports is attributed to the government’s decision to cut the total customs duty on gold from 15% to 6%, announced in the 2024-25 Union Budget. Gold doré, an alloy of gold and silver, also saw a reduction in duty from 14.35% to 5.35%. This tax relief, coupled with strong cultural and festive demand for gold, has prompted jewellers to stock up ahead of the upcoming season.

Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal noted, “The rise in gold exports should be viewed in the context of duty reduction and not just from an import perspective. The cut in import duty from 15% to 6% is a key factor driving this rise in exports.” He also highlighted that the duty cut was aimed at curbing smuggling and boosting legal imports.

In comparison, India’s gold imports in June stood at $3.06 billion, showing a steady upward trend as the festive season approaches. Overall, India’s gold imports have risen from $33.6 billion in 2018-2019 to $48.8 billion in 2023-24, reflecting the country’s sustained demand for the precious metal.

Despite this jump in imports, India’s gold imports during the April-July 2024-25 period dipped by 4.23%, totaling $12.64 billion. However, the record August imports contributed to a widening trade deficit of $29.65 billion for the month.

Switzerland remains India’s top source of gold imports, accounting for around 40%, followed by the UAE at 16% and South Africa at 10%. Gold continues to make up over 5% of India’s total imports.

Gold Import, Gold Import India, Import Duty: Gold prices soaring to $2222 in March 2024, marking record highs, concerns loom over a potential 90% decline in India’s gold imports for the month. A Reuters report, citing a government official and bank dealers, speculates on the drastic drop in imports.

The sharp rise in gold prices is attributed to market expectations of an imminent rate cut by the US Federal Reserve, with forecasts suggesting a potential reduction of 0.75%. Report said As a result, India’s gold import for March could see a significant downturn to 10-11 metric tons, down from 110 metric tons in February, as per a government official speaking on condition of anonymity.

Join our Facebook group to connect with a network of 75,000 Jewellers

With March still underway, customs clearance data indicates a notable decrease in gold clearance, while two bullion dealers have confirmed significantly reduced imports for the month. The prevailing discount on gold has exceeded $35.

In the Sarafa market, gold prices have surpassed the 68000 mark, dissuading consumers from purchasing gold jewellery at such elevated prices. The existing tax regime imposes an 18% tax on gold, comprising a 15% import duty and 3% GST, prompting industry stakeholders to advocate for duty reduction on various platforms.

Despite the challenging market conditions, hopes remain pinned on the upcoming Akshaya Tritiya and wedding season to buoy the jewellery sector.

Gold Import Duty: The government increased the import duty on gold by 5 percent. Know new import duty on gold and how this will impact gold prices.

Gold Import Duty, Import Duty on Gold, Import Duty: Taking a big decision, the government has increased the import duty on gold by 5 percent. At present, there is an import duty of 7.5% on gold. Now 12.5 per cent import duty will have to be paid on gold. Due to this, there will be a direct increase of 5 percent in the price of gold. Meaning, if the price of gold is Rs 50000 today, then the price of gold will increase by Rs 2500 directly. New import duty is effective from 30 June 2022

Due to the costly import duty on gold, the price of gold will be Rs 2500 more expensive. The government has increased the import duty on gold to deal with the falling rupee against the dollar. India imports 700 to 1000 tonnes of gold annually.

Gold comes from abroad, so it is traded in dollars. Due to which the value of Rupee Increasing import duty on gold will strengthen the rupee. This means that now there will be 15.75 percent total duty on gold.

The government has announced to increase the import duty on gold by 5 percent in a gadget notification issued on June 30, 2022. Here you can see the government issued gadget notification.

gold import duty 2022

At present, there is an import duty of 7.5% on gold. In this, 3% GST is added. Due to which the tax on gold increases to 10.5 percent. Now with the increase in duty by 5 per cent, the total tax on gold will increase to 15.5%. If we add GST to this, then there will be a further increase of 0.15 percent in the price. Meaning the customer will now have to pay 5.15 percent more.

Due to the price of gold becoming expensive, customers will have to pay Rs 2500 to 3000 per 10 grams directly. If the price of 10 grams is Rs 50000, then now they will have to pay Rs 52500 directly.

Due to the increase in import duty on gold, the risk of smuggling of gold has also increased. Due to the sudden increase in the price of gold, now gold smugglers will be active and smuggling through airport and road will increase. The falling rupee against the dollar can definitely get support from this move.

With the increase in duty, now those customers who bought gold jewelery last week and did not take their delivery will now worry more. Customers who went shopping on June 30, who had stopped the jewelery without paying the amount, will also have to pay a higher price today.

Due to the increase in import duty on gold, the risk of smuggling of gold has also increased. Due to the sudden increase in the price of gold, now gold smugglers will be active and smuggling through airport and road will increase.
