SEBI has revised the trading framework for exchange-traded funds (ETFs), introducing changes to base prices, price bands, pre-open trading and the close-out mechanism. The new rules came into effect on September 7, 2026, and are particularly important for investors trading gold and silver ETFs. According to a report published in India Today, the changes are aimed at improving price discovery and helping ETF prices respond more closely to the value of their underlying assets.

Check out the latest Gold, Silver prices in MCX, International Market, Sarafa and your city on our new website– https://goldpricetodaynews.com/

Gold and silver investors should take note of these changes as precious metal ETFs can see sharp price movements, particularly when international bullion markets move while Indian markets are closed.

What Has SEBI Changed in ETF Trading?

An ETF essentially has two important values. Its Net Asset Value (NAV) represents the per-unit value of the assets held by the fund, while its market price is determined by buying and selling activity on the stock exchange.

Ideally, the ETF’s market price should remain close to its NAV. However, the two can diverge, particularly during periods of high volatility or when an ETF has relatively low trading volumes.

SEBI has now changed several aspects of the ETF trading framework to improve this price discovery process.

New ETF Base Price System From September 7

Under the earlier system, an ETF’s base price was linked to its NAV from two trading days earlier, or T-2 NAV. Most ETFs could then move within a 20% price band on either side of that base price.

Under the revised framework, the base price will instead be linked to the previous trading day’s closing price. It will be calculated using the Volume-Weighted Average Price (VWAP) of the ETF during the final 30 minutes of the previous trading session.

In practical terms, the next day’s trading range will be based more closely on where the ETF actually traded toward the end of the previous session rather than relying on a two-day-old NAV.

Different ETFs Will Now Have Different Price Bands

SEBI has also introduced different price-band structures depending on the category of ETF.

Equity and debt ETFs: Initial price band of 10%, which can be expanded in stages up to 20%.

Whenever the applicable limit is reached, a 15-minute cooling-off period will apply before the band can be widened further.

Gold and silver ETFs: Initial price band of 6%, with the ability to widen the band in 3% increments without an upper limit.

Overnight and liquid ETFs: A fixed 5% price band will continue to apply.

The framework is particularly relevant for gold and silver ETFs because international bullion prices can move substantially while Indian markets are closed. The revised structure provides greater flexibility for these ETFs to adjust to significant overnight changes.

Gold and Silver ETFs to Get Pre-Open Call Auction

One of the most important changes for precious metal investors is the introduction of a pre-open call auction for gold and silver ETFs.

From September 7, buy and sell orders will be collected during the pre-open period and matched at a single equilibrium price. The objective is to make the opening price more representative of overall demand and supply instead of allowing an isolated order to disproportionately influence the opening trade.

According to the India Today report, the move is intended to improve price discovery and bring ETF trading prices closer to the value of their underlying assets.

Will Gold and Silver ETFs Always Trade at NAV?

No. The revised rules do not guarantee that an ETF’s market price will always exactly match its NAV.

Gold and silver ETFs can still trade at a premium or discount to NAV, depending on factors such as investor demand, supply, trading volumes and liquidity.

The new framework also does not change ETF returns, investment costs or taxation.

What Should Gold and Silver ETF Investors Do?

Investors should pay close attention to the indicative NAV (iNAV) before placing trades, particularly when markets are volatile or an ETF has relatively low liquidity.

Using limit orders can also help investors control the price at which their ETF units are bought or sold instead of relying entirely on the prevailing market order.

The new rules are primarily designed to improve the way ETFs respond to changes in their underlying assets. Investors should therefore understand the difference between an ETF’s NAV and its exchange-traded market price before making investment decisions.

Why These Changes Matter for Gold and Silver Investors

Gold and silver are traded globally, meaning their international prices can change significantly outside Indian market hours. When Indian exchanges reopen, precious metal ETFs may need to adjust quickly to these overnight movements.

The revised price-band mechanism and pre-open auction are designed to provide ETFs with greater flexibility and potentially improve the price-discovery process when such gaps occur.

For investors, the key takeaway is that gold and silver ETF trading may behave differently under the new framework, especially during periods of sharp international price movements.

FAQs

1. What are the major changes SEBI has made to ETF trading?

SEBI has revised several ETF trading rules, including the method used to determine the base price, price bands, pre-open trading and close-out process. The revised framework came into effect on September 7, 2026, with the broader objective of improving ETF price discovery and keeping market prices more closely aligned with underlying asset values.

2. What has changed for gold and silver ETFs?

Gold and silver ETFs will now have an initial 6% price band, which can be widened in 3% increments without an upper limit. They will also have a pre-open call auction at the beginning of the trading session. These changes are particularly relevant because international gold and silver prices can move sharply while Indian markets are closed.

3. Will gold and silver ETFs always trade at their NAV after the new SEBI rules?

No. The new framework does not guarantee that an ETF’s market price will always be equal to its Net Asset Value (NAV). Gold and silver ETFs can still trade at a premium or discount depending on demand, supply, liquidity and market conditions.

4. What is the new base price for ETFs under the revised rules?

Under the new framework, the ETF’s base price is linked to the previous trading day’s closing price, calculated using the Volume-Weighted Average Price (VWAP) of trades during the final 30 minutes of that session. This replaces the earlier approach that used the ETF’s T-2 NAV as the base price.

5. What should investors check before trading gold or silver ETFs?

Investors should consider checking the ETF’s indicative NAV (iNAV) before placing an order, particularly during periods of high volatility or when liquidity is low. Using limit orders can also help investors control their execution price. The new SEBI framework does not change ETF returns, costs or taxation.

(Key Highlights)

As global commodity markets grapple with shifting macroeconomic forces, bullion-backed exchange-traded funds (ETFs) are facing a major turning point. Amid a strengthening U.S. dollar and a distinctly hawkish shift in central bank sentiment, financial analysts warn that Gold ETFs could see fresh outflows on rising bets on Fed monetary tightening. This continuous offloading of physically backed products threatens to drag down already struggling gold prices, which have officially breached critical psychological support levels.

In a stark reversal from the record-breaking rallies seen late last year, spot gold prices slipped below the 4,000 dollar per ounce threshold on Wednesday for the first time since November 2025. This downward trajectory represents an approximate 29% retreat from the all-time historic high of 5,594.82 dollar per ounce achieved in January.

Higher Interest Rates and Changing Macro Realities

According to Julius Baer analyst Carsten Menke, ETF flows mirror broader U.S. monetary policy expectations. When interest rates are projected to remain elevated, non-yielding assets like bullion rapidly lose their luster.

Inflation Fears Reignited: Expectations of aggressive Federal Reserve interest rate cuts were the primary catalyst behind the 2025 gold boom. However, surging energy prices in the wake of the Iran war have revived global inflation concerns.

Hawkish Shift: Central banks, including the U.S. Federal Reserve, have adopted a markedly aggressive monetary stance. Investors are no longer merely pricing in prolonged high rates; they are actively scaling up bets on additional rate hikes.

Capital Diverting to AI: Financial experts note that rising interest rate forecasts alongside massive cash-raising efforts for Artificial Intelligence (AI) suggest a highly bullish medium-term outlook for the U.S. economy, keeping investor attention firmly focused away from safe-haven metals.

Inside the Numbers: ETF Outflows vs. Wall Street Forecasts

Data from the World Gold Council highlights that gold-backed ETFs recorded a net outflow of 16 metric tons in May. This selling pressure persisted aggressively through the first half of June. While funds managed to notch a minor weekly net inflow recovery, major global banking institutions are lowering their expectations.

ING

Formally stated that ETF demand is likely to remain significantly less supportive of gold prices in 2026 compared with the strong contribution it provided throughout 2025.

The bank believes weaker investor inflows into gold ETFs could continue to weigh on bullion prices.

Standard Chartered

Revealed that at current gold prices below 4,000 dollar per ounce, more than 200 metric tons of gold held in global ETFs are now in loss-making territory.

This development could negatively affect investor sentiment and future ETF demand.

Morgan Stanley

Noted that its bullish gold price forecast of 5,200 dollar per ounce for the second half of 2026 is now heavily dependent on a recovery in ETF buying and lower oil prices.

The bank considers such a scenario increasingly unlikely under current market conditions.

Goldman Sachs

Softened its previously optimistic outlook by lowering its December 2026 gold price forecast.

The firm also reduced its projected gold ETF demand, reflecting a more cautious stance toward the precious metals market.

Central Bank Demand Offers Critical Support

While soft ETF retail demand poses a structural headwind for spot bullion prices in the near term, precious metals retain a crucial layer of long-term defense.

Market analysts emphasize that official sector buying remains incredibly robust. Central banks globally are continuing to aggressively purchase gold bullion to diversify their sovereign reserves away from fiat currencies. If official sector institutional demand continues to expand at its current rapid clip, it has the structural capacity to fully insulate the market and make up for the shortfalls left behind by retreating ETF investors.

FAQ’s

1. Why are Gold ETFs experiencing outflows in 2026?
Gold ETFs are facing renewed selling pressure as investors increasingly expect the U.S. Federal Reserve to maintain higher interest rates for longer and potentially implement additional rate hikes. Higher rates reduce the attractiveness of non-yielding assets like gold, prompting investors to move capital toward interest-bearing investments and growth-oriented sectors.

2. What caused gold prices to fall below $4,000 per ounce?
The decline has been driven by a combination of factors, including a stronger U.S. dollar, rising bond yields, persistent inflation concerns, and growing expectations of tighter monetary policy. These developments have triggered ETF outflows and reduced investor demand for gold, pushing prices below a key psychological support level.

3. How have major financial institutions changed their outlook on gold?
Several leading banks have adopted a more cautious stance. ING expects weaker ETF demand in 2026, Goldman Sachs has lowered its gold price forecast and ETF demand projections, while Morgan Stanley says its bullish target depends on a recovery in ETF buying. Standard Chartered also highlighted growing losses among ETF investors at current price levels.

4. What role do Gold ETFs play in influencing bullion prices?
Gold-backed ETFs are an important source of investment demand for the precious metal. When investors buy ETF shares, fund managers typically purchase physical gold, supporting prices. Conversely, sustained ETF outflows often result in gold sales, increasing market supply and placing downward pressure on bullion prices.

5. Can central bank gold purchases offset weak ETF demand?
Many analysts believe central bank buying could provide significant support to the gold market. Central banks around the world continue to increase gold reserves as part of diversification strategies away from traditional fiat currencies. Strong official-sector demand has the potential to partially or fully offset the impact of weaker ETF investment flows over the long term.

Indian gold ETFs recorded their 12th straight month of inflows in April 2026, but demand momentum weakened sharply compared to January’s peak. Elevated profit-booking, softer gold prices, slowing investor participation, and recent import duty hikes triggered rising redemptions, signaling a more cautious sentiment among both retail and institutional investors.

WGC Report: India’s gold Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) managed to extend their historic positive streak into a full year, though underlying market dynamics indicate that the breathless demand seen earlier this year is beginning to cool. According to the latest World Gold Council (WGC) report for April 2026, Indian gold ETFs continued to attract positive capital allocations, marking the 12th consecutive month of net inflows. Net inflows for the month stood at INR 30.4 billion (US 325 million dollar), aligning closely with consensus industry estimates. However, while these inflows represent a modest 3% sequential increase month-on-month, they remained severely below the capital wave observed in January.

April’s intake reached a mere 13% of the blockbuster INR 240 billion (US 2.6 billion dollar) recorded at the start of the year, signaling a visible moderation in investor appetite alongside sustained profit-taking.

Elevated Redemptions and Softer Asset Values

The report says that, a major factor capping the sector’s net growth is an ongoing wave of liquidations. Redemptions remained highly elevated through April at INR 20.5 billion (US 220 million dollar). This reflects a persistent trend of investor profit-taking that has dominated the domestic market since February.

The cooling momentum is also visible across broader asset metrics:

AUM Compression: Total Assets Under Management (AUM) stood at INR 1,781 billion (US 19 billion dollar), marking a modest 3% decline from January’s peak, primarily dragged down by an approximate 9% correction in domestic gold prices in INR terms.

Slowing Participation: While cumulative holdings rose by 1.1 tonnes to a total of 116.7 tonnes and total investor folios reached a healthy 12.5 million, the pace of new user adoption has hit a wall. Folio additions dropped to just 77,413 in April—the lowest monthly growth metric recorded since September 2024.

Import Duty Hike Triggers May Outflows

The cooling trend observed in April faced an abrupt regulatory shock in May. Following the central government’s recent decision to aggressively hike the customs import duty on gold, the ETF landscape experienced sudden capital flight.

Heavy redemptions hitting paper gold markets between May 13 and May 18 largely erased the modest gains accumulated during the first half of the month. While month-to-date demand managed to remain marginally positive at approximately INR 1 billion (~US 12 million dollar), the sudden mid-month reversal highlights a shifting sentiment. As macro conditions tighten and regulatory hurdles increase, institutional and retail investors alike are adopting a far more conservative stance toward paper gold allocations.

FAQ’s

1. How did Indian Gold ETFs perform in April 2026?
Indian gold ETFs continued their positive trend in April 2026, recording net inflows of INR 30.4 billion (US 325 million dollar). This marked the 12th consecutive month of positive inflows, although overall demand momentum slowed significantly compared to earlier months.

2. Why are analysts saying gold ETF demand is cooling?
Despite positive inflows, April’s inflows were only around 13% of the massive INR 240 billion recorded in January 2026. Elevated redemptions, profit-taking activity, and slower folio additions suggest investor enthusiasm has moderated after a strong start to the year.

3. What impact did the gold import duty hike have on ETFs?
The recent increase in customs duty on gold triggered significant redemptions between May 13 and May 18, reversing much of the gains seen earlier in the month. The policy move appears to have made investors more cautious toward paper gold investments.

4. What happened to Gold ETF assets under management (AUM)?
Gold ETF AUM declined to INR 1,781 billion (US19 billion dollar), around 3% below January’s peak levels. The decline was mainly attributed to softer domestic gold prices, which corrected nearly 9% in INR terms from earlier highs.

5. How is investor participation changing in Indian Gold ETFs?
Investor participation remains relatively strong overall, with total folios reaching 12.5 million. However, the pace of new investor additions slowed sharply in April, with only 77,413 new folios added — the weakest monthly growth since September 2024.

Gold ETF Inflows 2026: In a year marked by dramatic price swings and shifting geopolitical alliances, Asia’s economic giants—China and India—have emerged as the primary anchors for the global gold market. According to the latest data from the World Gold Council (WGC), consistent demand from these two nations has been instrumental in keeping net investments in physically-backed gold Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) in positive territory, even as a staggering 68% of global investors opted to exit their positions as of mid-April.

The Asian Fortress: China and India Lead the Charge

While Western markets have shown signs of hesitation, Asian investors are doubling down on the “yellow metal” as a hedge against uncertainty.

China: Reaffirming its status as a gold powerhouse, China has been the single largest source of investment in gold ETFs this year, contributing a massive 9.04 billion dollar.

India: Following closely, India recorded 3.26 billion dollar in net inflows, underscoring the deep-rooted cultural and financial trust in gold within the subcontinent.

Japan: Also making a notable impact, Japan secured its spot as the sixth-largest net investor globally, chipping in with 1.26 billion dollar.

Regionally, Asia led the world with 14.87 billion dollar in net inflows, dwarfing the contributions from North America (2.06 billion dollar) and Europe (2.94 billion dollar).

Global ETF Performance: A Tale of Two Weeks

The week ending April 17 marked the second consecutive week of positive momentum for gold ETFs. This recovery follows a turbulent March where fears of the Iran conflict sparked concerns over inflation and a strengthening US Dollar, causing many funds to rotate capital from gold into crude oil.

Weekly Breakdown (Ending April 17):

Global Inflows: 63.96 billion dollar

Global Outflows: 43.73 billion dollar

Net Investment: 20.23 billion dollar

Interestingly, the weekly data showed a brief reversal of the annual trend: US investors poured 2.17 billion dollar into the market, while China saw a minor negative net investment of 0.01 billion dollar during that specific seven-day window.

Price Correction: Gold Stabilizes After Record Peaks

The gold market is currently going through a phase of price consolidation. After reaching a historic high of 5,608 dollar per ounce on January 29, 2026, gold prices have corrected by more than 15%. At present, spot gold is trading at around 4,712 dollar per ounce, while COMEX June futures are priced at approximately 4,729.51 dollar per ounce.

Despite this correction from the January highs, gold remains a strong performer for the year, maintaining a 9% gain year-to-date.

The Road Ahead: Supply Deficits and Volatility

The resilience shown by Chinese and Indian investors comes at a critical time. With the market facing its sixth consecutive annual supply deficit, above-ground stocks are being eroded, leaving the metal vulnerable to liquidity squeezes.

While industrial demand—particularly in the solar sector—faces headwinds due to high prices, the “perfect storm” of retail investment and macroeconomic uncertainty continues to support the floor for gold. As long as China and India maintain their appetite, the gold ETF market appears well-positioned to weather the ongoing global volatility.

FAQ’s

1. Why are China and India leading gold ETF inflows in 2026?
China and India are leading gold ETF inflows due to strong retail demand, cultural preference for gold, and growing concerns over global economic uncertainty. Investors in both countries view gold as a safe-haven asset, especially during periods of inflation and geopolitical instability.

2. How much has China invested in gold ETFs this year?
According to World Gold Council data, China has contributed approximately 9.04 billion dollar in net inflows into gold ETFs, making it the largest single-country investor globally in 2026.

3. What is India’s contribution to global gold ETF inflows?
India has recorded around 3.26 billion dollar in net inflows into gold ETFs in 2026, reflecting strong domestic demand and continued trust in gold as a long-term investment and wealth preservation asset.

4. How has the global gold ETF market performed overall?
Despite large-scale exits from many global investors, particularly in Western markets, the overall gold ETF market has remained positive, supported mainly by strong inflows from Asia, especially China and India.

5. What is the current trend in gold prices and outlook?
Gold prices have corrected over 15% from their record high of 5,608 Dollar per ounce but remain up around 9% year-to-date. Analysts suggest continued volatility due to supply deficits and geopolitical uncertainty, but strong investment demand is expected to support prices.

WGC Report: Despite a wave of profit-taking and record redemptions, India’s appetite for “paper” and digital gold remains insatiable. According to the latest India Gold Market Update from the World Gold Council (WGC), the first quarter of 2026 has solidified a major shift in how Indian households invest in the precious metal, with digital platforms and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) seeing unprecedented participation as it hits 11-Month Inflow Streak.

Gold ETFs: Record Redemptions Can’t Stop the Inflow Streak

The Indian Gold ETF market continues to defy global trends. While North American and European funds have seen fluctuations, Indian ETFs extended their winning streak to 11 consecutive months in March 2026.

Resilient Inflows: The sector recorded net inflows of INR 22.7 billion (244 million dollar) in March alone. While this was the lowest monthly net in seven months, it pushed total gold holdings to a staggering 115 tonnes.

Profit-Taking Hits Record Highs: The moderation in net growth was primarily due to investors locking in gains. Record redemptions of INR 31.6 billion (341 million dollar) were recorded in March, carrying forward a trend of profit-booking from February.

A Stellar Quarter: Q1 2026 stands as the strongest quarter for Indian gold ETFs on record, with total net inflows reaching INR 316 billion (3.45 billion dollar). Notably, 80% of this activity was concentrated in January during the price rally.

Broadening Participation: The number of investor accounts (folios) continues to climb, with 0.31 million new accounts added in March, bringing the total to 12.39 million. Gold ETFs now command 2.3% of the total Assets Under Management (AUM) of Indian mutual funds, up from just 0.9% a year ago.

The Digital Gold Revolution

While ETFs capture institutional and seasoned retail interest, Digital Gold has become the go-to vehicle for the broader population, driven by the ease of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI).

Massive Volume Growth: Total digital gold purchases in February reached INR 30.3 billion, equivalent to roughly 1.9 tonnes. This is 53% higher than the monthly average of the preceding 13 months.

Explosive Value Increase: The World Gold Council highlights that the value of digital gold transactions has increased nearly fourfold over the past year.

Regulatory Call to Action: Despite its popularity, the WGC report notes that digital gold remains an unregulated channel. The sheer scale of growth—driven by low minimum investment requirements—underscores an increasing need for formal regulatory oversight to protect retail investors.

Market Outlook: A Strong Start to April

The momentum shows no signs of slowing down as the new quarter begins. Data from the first ten days of April (April 1–10) already shows net ETF inflows of INR 17.36 billion (187 million dollar), adding another 1.2 tonnes to collective holdings.

The World Gold Council suggests that as price volatility stabilizes, the combination of digital accessibility and formal investment products will continue to drive gold’s share in the Indian household portfolio.

FAQ’s

Q1. What does the WGC report say about India’s gold ETFs in 2026?
A: The report says Indian Gold ETFs continued strong performance with 11 months of continuous inflows, even though investors also booked profits and caused record redemptions in March.

Q2. Why were there record redemptions in Gold ETFs?
A: Many investors sold their ETF units to lock in profits after gold prices rose sharply earlier. This profit-taking caused high redemptions, even though overall investment remained positive.

Q3. How much money flowed into Gold ETFs in Q1 2026?
A: Q1 2026 saw record inflows of around INR 316 billion (USD 3.45 billion), making it the strongest quarter ever for Indian Gold ETFs.

Q4. What is driving the growth of Digital Gold in India?
A: Digital Gold is growing because it is easy to buy through mobile apps using UPI, requires very small investments, and is convenient for everyday investors.

Q5. What concern does the report raise about Digital Gold?
A: The report highlights that Digital Gold is still unregulated, meaning there are no strong official rules, which raises concerns about investor safety and the need for regulation.
