Japan has taken another major step away from its decades-long era of ultra-low interest rates as the country’s central bank responds to persistent inflation pressures, higher energy costs and continued weakness in the yen. The Bank of Japan (BOJ) raised its benchmark interest rate from 1% to 1.25% on Friday, September 18, 2026, taking borrowing costs to their highest level since 1995. The decision was widely expected and represents another stage in Japan’s gradual shift away from its previous ultra-loose monetary policy.

Check out the latest Gold, Silver prices in MCX, International Market, Sarafa and your city on our new website–https://goldpricetodaynews.com/

BOJ Continues Monetary Policy Normalisation

The latest rate increase follows a series of policy moves that began after Japan moved away from negative interest rates. The BOJ has been gradually raising borrowing costs as it attempts to bring monetary policy closer to levels seen in other major economies.

The rate hike comes at a time when central banks globally are dealing with inflationary pressures linked partly to higher energy costs. The US Federal Reserve has also recently increased its benchmark interest rate, while the European Central Bank has raised borrowing costs earlier this month.

For Japan, higher energy prices are particularly important because the country relies heavily on imported energy. Disruptions to oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz have added to concerns over energy costs and inflation.

Japan Faces Inflation and Weak Yen Challenges

Japan is dealing with several economic pressures, including a weak yen, higher consumer prices and a shrinking workforce.

Official data released ahead of the BOJ’s decision showed that Japan’s core inflation eased slightly in August. Core inflation fell to 1.7% from 1.8% in July, bringing it closer to the central bank’s 2% inflation target.

While Japan’s inflation rate remains relatively moderate compared with some other major economies, sustained price increases represent an important shift for a country that experienced very low inflation and periods of deflation for decades.

Energy Prices Add to Inflation Concerns

Global oil and gas prices have risen this year as the Iran war has disrupted energy shipments through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

Japan is particularly exposed to these disruptions because of its dependence on energy imports from the Middle East. Higher energy costs can increase import expenses and put additional pressure on consumer prices.

The BOJ therefore faces the challenge of controlling inflation while also considering the impact of higher borrowing costs on Japan’s economic growth.

Yen Weakness Remains a Major Concern

The Japanese yen has remained under pressure in recent months, increasing concerns about the cost of imported goods and energy.

In August, Tokyo and Washington confirmed that they had jointly intervened to slow the yen’s decline after the currency reached a fresh 40-year low. The coordinated intervention was the first such action since 2011, when Japan and the US acted together following the devastating earthquake and tsunami in eastern Japan.

Japan’s Ministry of Finance and US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent have previously indicated that further joint intervention could be considered if necessary.

Bessent has also been pressing the BOJ to raise interest rates to help support the yen, calling on Governor Kazuo Ueda to “do the right thing”.

What Comes Next for the BOJ?

The latest rate increase reinforces the BOJ’s shift away from its long-standing ultra-low interest rate policy. Markets will now focus on Governor Kazuo Ueda’s comments and future policy signals to assess how quickly the central bank could raise rates further.

The direction of the yen, inflation, energy prices and global monetary policy will remain important factors for Japan’s economy. The BOJ’s policy path could also have wider implications for currency and financial markets as investors reassess interest-rate differences between Japan and other major economies.

The BOJ’s latest decision was approved by a 7-2 vote, with two board members voting against the increase.

FAQ’s

1. Why did the Bank of Japan raise interest rates on September 18, 2026?
The BOJ raised its benchmark rate to address inflationary pressures and continue moving away from its long-standing ultra-low interest rate policy. Higher energy costs, imported inflation and weakness in the Japanese yen have added to the economic pressures facing Japan.

2. What is Japan’s new interest rate after the BOJ decision?
The Bank of Japan increased its benchmark interest rate from 1% to 1.25% on September 18, 2026. This is the highest level seen in Japan since 1995 and marks another step in the central bank’s monetary policy normalisation.

3. How is inflation affecting Japan’s monetary policy?
Japan has experienced a significant change after decades of very low inflation and deflation. Although core inflation eased to 1.7% in August from 1.8% in July, price pressures remain an important consideration for the BOJ as it assesses future interest-rate decisions.

4. Why is the Japanese yen important for Japan’s inflation outlook?
A weaker yen can make imported products and energy more expensive for Japan. Since the country depends heavily on imported energy, currency weakness can add to inflationary pressures. This makes the yen an important factor for the BOJ when considering its monetary policy.

5. What factors could influence the BOJ’s future interest-rate decisions?
Future decisions are likely to depend on inflation trends, wage growth, economic activity, energy prices, the yen’s movement and developments in global monetary policy. Investors will also closely follow Governor Kazuo Ueda’s comments for indications about the timing and pace of any additional rate increases.

The Bank of Japan (BOJ) kept its benchmark short-term interest rate unchanged at 1% at the conclusion of its two-day monetary policy meeting on Friday, a decision that matched market expectations after last month’s increase pushed borrowing costs to their highest level in 31 years.

Although policy settings remained unchanged, the central bank delivered a hawkish message by reiterating that it intends to continue raising interest rates if economic activity, inflation, and financial conditions evolve in line with its expectations.

Government Intervention Fails to Deliver Lasting Yen Support

Ahead of the BOJ’s policy announcement, the Japanese government intervened in currency markets by buying yen and selling U.S. dollars during Thursday’s New York trading session, according to a market source. However, the recovery in the Japanese currency proved short-lived, with the yen quickly losing momentum after the intervention.

The move highlighted Tokyo’s ongoing efforts to stabilize the weakening currency, though the immediate impact on exchange rates was limited.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Comments on Yen Valuation

In a development that suggested international support for Japan’s actions, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Japan may have intervened because the yen appeared to be “very undervalued,” according to a Fox Business Network reporter.

Bessent has repeatedly encouraged the BOJ to continue raising interest rates, increasing market attention on Governor Kazuo Ueda’s post-meeting comments regarding the future path of monetary policy.

BOJ Signals Commitment to Further Rate Hikes

In its official policy statement, the BOJ emphasized that it will continue adjusting the degree of monetary accommodation by raising policy rates when supported by developments in:

Economic activity

Inflation

Financial conditions

The central bank also identified several important factors that will influence the timing and pace of future policy tightening, including:

Developments in the Middle East

Growth in AI-related demand

Exchange-rate movements

One Policymaker Called for an Immediate Rate Increase

While the policy decision received broad support, board member Hajime Takata dissented from the majority view.

Takata argued that the policy rate should have been increased immediately to 1.25%, citing inflation risks arising from external demand shocks.

He was the only board member to oppose keeping interest rates unchanged.

BOJ Decision Follows Federal Reserve Meeting

Japan’s policy meeting came just two days after the U.S. Federal Reserve also left interest rates unchanged.

The Fed’s decision, however, featured three dissenting policymakers who supported a 25-basis-point rate increase, reinforcing global concerns that inflation remains a challenge for major central banks.

Weak Yen Continues to Challenge Policymakers

The BOJ raised interest rates to a 31-year high in June while indicating further tightening could follow as it seeks to contain inflation driven largely by higher energy costs.

According to a Reuters survey cited in the report, most analysts expect the BOJ to raise interest rates again to 1.25% before the end of the year.

The central bank’s gradual approach to tightening has been blamed for contributing to the yen’s slide to a 40-year low, increasing import costs for Japanese households and retailers.

Tokyo’s Currency Intervention Returns

The latest currency intervention, first reported by the Nikkei newspaper, would mark Japan’s first yen-buying operation since its record 73 billion dollar intervention between late April and early May, which had little lasting success in reversing the currency’s long-term decline.

Japan’s top currency diplomat Atsushi Mimura declined to confirm whether intervention had taken place but indicated that Tokyo remained in close communication with U.S. authorities.

He also noted that Japan was coordinating closely with South Korea, which also conducted dollar-selling intervention on Thursday.

Governor Ueda Faces Growing Communication Challenge

Analysts believe Governor Kazuo Ueda may need to reinforce the BOJ’s commitment to future tightening through stronger communication in order to discourage further selling of the yen.

However, the report noted that several factors could limit the BOJ’s hawkish stance, including:

Pressure from a dovish administration

Potential economic damage from the recent 7.1-magnitude earthquake in Kumamoto Prefecture, home to major manufacturers and semiconductor plants

Economic Data Paints a Mixed Picture

Despite concerns surrounding energy prices and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, recent Japanese economic indicators have remained relatively resilient.

According to the report:

Factory output increased in June.

Manufacturers projected further production gains over the next two months.

Annual core inflation in Tokyo accelerated to 1.7% in July, indicating that price pressures continue to broaden.

These developments suggest the BOJ continues to monitor inflation closely while balancing economic growth and currency stability.

FAQs

1. Why did the Bank of Japan keep interest rates unchanged?

The BOJ maintained its policy rate at 1.0% because the market had largely anticipated a pause following last month’s rate increase. However, it stressed that future policy decisions will depend on inflation, economic growth and financial market conditions.

2. Did the BOJ indicate more interest rate hikes are coming?

Yes. The central bank stated it will continue adjusting monetary policy if economic activity, inflation and financial conditions evolve in line with its expectations, signaling that further rate hikes remain possible.

3. Why did Japan intervene in the currency market?

Japanese authorities bought yen and sold U.S. dollars to support the weakening currency. Although the intervention briefly strengthened the yen, the recovery was short-lived, keeping pressure on policymakers.

4. What factors will influence the BOJ’s next policy decision?

The BOJ will monitor inflation trends, economic growth, exchange-rate movements, geopolitical developments, AI-driven investment demand and overall financial market conditions before deciding on future interest rate changes.

5. What is the outlook for Japan’s monetary policy?

Most market analysts expect the BOJ to continue its gradual policy normalization. If inflation remains elevated and economic conditions stay resilient, another interest rate increase later in 2026 remains a strong possibility.

(Impact on Gold Prices)

(Bearish)

(Bearish)

(Bearish)

1. Bank of Japan
Bank of Japan (BOJ)

BOJ Interest Rates: In a historic move that underscores a massive shift in global monetary policy, Japan is taking bold steps to navigate severe global economic headwinds. The Bank of Japan raises interest rates to a 31-year high, marking another landmark step in normalizing monetary policy as it focuses on taming price pressures from the energy shock caused by the Iran war. This crucial decision places the BOJ alongside other global central banks pushing into tighter economic territory to decisively combat rising inflation.

Check the latest rates for gold and silver—across MCX, international markets, the bullion market, and your city—on our new website: https://goldpricetodaynews.com/

Historic Rate Increase and Economic Rationale

The Bank of Japan raised interest rates on Tuesday to levels unseen since 1995. The hike was the first since December and aligns the BOJ with other central banks shifting towards tighter policy to combat inflation, including the European Central Bank.

Deputy Governor Shinichi Uchida acknowledged the recent U.S.-Iranian peace deal, which he described as a “welcome move”, but noted persistent inflationary risks. Uchida held the news conference on behalf of Governor Kazuo Ueda, who missed the meeting for medical treatment.

“Compared with the previous meeting, the risk of a sharp deterioration in the economy has diminished. On the other hand, price rises are broadening and there is a risk underlying inflation may deviate from our target,” Uchida said.

In a statement announcing the decision to raise its short-term policy rate to 1% from 0.75%, the BOJ stated that the risk of Japan’s economy deteriorating sharply from the Middle East conflict has diminished due to progress made in procuring alternative energy supplies.

However, the price outlook warranted attention as companies were seen passing on rising oil costs to each other at a “relatively fast pace,” which could push up consumer prices across a wide range of items.

“Taking into account that medium- and long-term inflation expectations have also continued to increase, there is a risk of underlying inflation deviating above our price target,” the BOJ said.

Board Breakdown and Market Reaction

The landmark decision was finalized by a 7-1 vote:

The Dissent: Toichiro Asada, who joined the board in April as the first member hand-picked by dovish premier Sanae Takaichi, dissented on the view that downside risks to growth from the Middle East conflict were bigger than inflation risks.

Analyst Outlook: “If anything, the focus had been on whether a 50-bp rate hike would be proposed, but no such proposal was made. In terms of the future rate-hike path, this is positive for risk asset prices, as it suggests that a sharp rate hike is likely to be avoided,” said Hirofumi Suzuki, chief FX strategist at SMBC. He added that the BOJ is likely to continue raising rates at a gradual pace of around once every six months to one year.

Stock Market Surge: The Nikkei 225 jumped as much as 1% to set a fresh record high above 70,000 after the announcement.

Yen Volatility: The yen rose briefly before sliding to 160.29 per dollar, teetering around the 160 line seen as heightening the chance of currency intervention.

Bond Taper Program and Broadening Inflation Risks

The BOJ also decided to pause its bond taper programme from April next year and continue to buy roughly 2 trillion yen (12.5 billion dollar) in Japanese government bonds (JGB) per month. It will discontinue its practice of conducting a review of its bond taper plan each year, but stands ready to amend the pace of purchases if necessary at future policy meetings.

The Middle East conflict has complicated the BOJ’s policy path by adding inflationary pressure through higher oil costs, while hurting an economy heavily reliant on imported fuel. While the peace deal between the U.S. and Iran eased market fears over global inflationary pressures, wholesale inflation spiked to a 3-year high of 6.3% in May, showing that companies were already passing on higher costs from the energy shock.

Analysts expect core consumer inflation to accelerate back above the BOJ’s 2% target later this year, after sliding below the level on government subsidies aimed at curbing utility bills. A weak yen, which pushes up import prices and broader inflation, will also keep the BOJ under pressure to stay on course for further rate hikes.

The BOJ’s hike comes amid a busy week for global central banks. The U.S. Federal Reserve is widely expected to hold its benchmark interest rate steady on Wednesday, but officials have recently signaled their rising concern about inflation, leading more in the market to predict its next move as a hike rather than a cut.

FAQ’s

1. Why did the Bank of Japan raise interest rates to a 31-year high?
The BOJ increased rates to combat rising inflation, particularly after higher energy costs linked to the Iran conflict pushed up prices across the economy. Policymakers believe underlying inflation risks have strengthened and could exceed the bank’s target.

2. What is Japan’s new benchmark interest rate?
The Bank of Japan raised its short-term policy rate from 0.75% to 1.0%, marking the highest interest rate level in Japan since 1995 and another major step away from its long-standing ultra-loose monetary policy.

3. How did financial markets react to the BOJ’s decision?
Japan’s stock market reacted positively, with the Nikkei 225 rising to a new record high above 70,000. Meanwhile, the Japanese yen experienced volatility, briefly strengthening before weakening against the U.S. dollar.

4. What role did the Iran-related energy shock play in the BOJ’s decision?
Higher oil prices caused by Middle East tensions increased inflationary pressures in Japan, which relies heavily on imported energy. Although the U.S.-Iran peace agreement eased some concerns, the BOJ believes inflation risks remain elevated.

5. Will the Bank of Japan continue raising interest rates?
Many analysts expect the BOJ to continue raising rates gradually if inflation remains above target. Market experts suggest future hikes could occur every six months to one year, depending on economic growth, inflation trends, and currency movements.

Gold and silver prices dropped as Japan’s inflation hit a two-year high of 4%, strengthening BOJ rate hike calls. U.S.-Russia sanctions talks and rising U.S. jobless claims fueled market volatility. Weaker dollar supported gold, while a stronger rupee capped domestic gains. Analysts predict continued price fluctuations amid global uncertainties.

Gold and silver prices declined on Friday, as market sentiment was influenced by rising inflation in Japan and ongoing geopolitical tensions. Japan’s inflation rate surged to a two-year high of 4% in January, up from 3.6% in December, marking the 34th consecutive month above the Bank of Japan’s (BOJ) 2% target. The latest inflation data has strengthened calls for a BOJ rate hike, with policymakers warning of inflation risks and the continued weakness of the yen in their recent meetings.

Meanwhile, geopolitical concerns weighed on global markets as the United States signaled potential sanctions relief for Russia amid negotiations to end the Ukraine war. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated on Thursday that the U.S. may increase or ease sanctions depending on Russia’s willingness to negotiate. President Donald Trump is pushing for a swift resolution to the three-year-long conflict, while his envoy, Kellogg, met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. Although the outcome of the meeting remains undisclosed, NATO leaders have emphasized the need for strong security guarantees in any peace agreement. Additionally, U.S. Representative Waltz urged Ukraine to sign a minerals deal, citing Trump’s frustration over delays.

For Expert Views on Gold and Silver Prices Watch Our Youtube Channel- (13 Million Views)

On Thursday, gold and silver prices rebounded, erasing previous session losses as the U.S. dollar index weakened and jobless claims surged. U.S. jobless claims rose to 219,000, exceeding expectations of 214,000, leading to increased safe-haven demand for precious metals. The ongoing trade tensions between the U.S. and the EU, as well as Trump’s tariff policies, have further fueled uncertainty, supporting gold and silver prices. However, a recovery in the Indian rupee against the U.S. dollar has capped gains in domestic markets.

Market Outlook

According to Manoj Kumar Jain, Director at Prithvi Finmart, gold and silver are likely to remain volatile amid fluctuations in the dollar index, the U.S. trade war, and upcoming U.S. manufacturing PMI data. He expects gold and silver to hold key support levels at $2,880 and $32.40 per troy ounce, respectively, on a weekly closing basis.

Gold levels: Support at $2,934-$2,922, resistance at $2,970-$2,988 per troy ounce

Silver levels: Support at $33.10-$32.80, resistance at $33.64-$34.00 per troy ounce

MCX Gold: Support at ₹85,650-₹85,200, resistance at ₹86,360-₹86,720

MCX Silver: Support at ₹96,400-₹95,750, resistance at ₹97,850-₹98,600

Jain suggests buying gold on dips around ₹85,650 with a stop-loss at ₹85,300 and a target of ₹86,350.

Gold Price, Silver Price, Trump News: The much-anticipated inauguration of U.S. President Donald Trump is set to be the key event driving gold and silver prices today. Scheduled to take place at 10:30 PM IST, Trump’s speech is expected to impact global financial markets significantly. With U.S. markets closed for the day, all eyes are on the event’s potential implications for the precious metals market.

Another major event to watch this week is the Bank of Japan’s interest rate decision. Analysts widely anticipate that the BoJ may announce a rate hike, which could have significant implications for global financial markets.

Meanwhile, in China, the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) has maintained its 1-year loan prime rate at 3.1% and the 5-year LPR at 3.6%. The PBOC has been taking measures to prevent sharp currency depreciation and ensure foreign exchange stability, aiming to curb excessive volatility.

For Expert Views on Gold and Silver Prices Watch Our Youtube Channel- (10 Million Views)

Gold and silver have experienced heightened price fluctuations, witnessing profit-taking from higher levels due to a rebound in the dollar index and rising U.S. 10-year bond yields. The dollar index and bond yields, currently at multi-month highs, have capped gains in precious metals. Additionally, upbeat U.S. housing data contributed to profit-taking in gold and silver. However, ongoing global economic uncertainty, concerns surrounding Trump’s speech, and an increase in U.S. jobless claims are lending support to precious metal prices. Furthermore, central bank buying of gold is providing additional price support.

According to Manoj Kumar Jain, Director in Prithvi Finmart gold and silver are holding its key support levels of $2,634 and $29.50 per troy ounce respectively on a weekly closing basis in the international markets. Jain said for today’s session, gold has support at $2,734-$2,722 and resistance at $2,764-$2,780 per troy ounce, while silver has support at $30.84-$30.50 and resistance at $31.40-$31.74 per troy ounce.

Jain said on the MCX, gold finds support at ₹78,770-₹78,440 and resistance at ₹79,300-₹79,550. Silver has support at ₹91,100-₹90,450, with resistance at ₹92,200-₹92,850.

Jain said given the heightened uncertainty ahead of Trump’s speech, it is advisable to stay cautious and avoid aggressive positions in the precious metals market today.
