The dollar gained after White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan told a media briefing that Russian President Vladimir Putin had decided to invade Ukraine, which the White House opposed. The U.S., Britain, Japan, Latvia, Norway and the Netherlands told their citizens last week to leave Ukraine immediately.
The dollar index to remain in limelight this week ahead of the U.S. Fed emergency meeting, G-20 meetings and developments on Russia-Ukraine tensions. Jain expect the dollar index could show further strength towards 96.40-96.60 levels.
On the other hand, the rupee plunged last week amid strength in the dollar index and record gains in crude oil prices. Continuous sell-off of foreign institutional investors in the domestic equity markets also pushed a rupee lower against major global currencies. Brent crude oil crossed $95 a barrel last week; higher energy prices continue to keep a rupee lower against a basket of currencies.
Jain expect the rupee to remain weak this week and expected to test its support level of 75.7000-76.0000 again.
