“The Sparkling Future: India’s Export Potential in Gems & Jewellery” is a research-based book that explores India’s vast potential in the gems and jewellery export sector. Dr. Tantia, an esteemed IRS Officer and Joint Commissioner in Customs and GST, Mumbai, is recognized for his versatility and contributions to the industry. His book offers a comprehensive analysis of the industry’s prospects, emphasizing India’s pivotal role in the global market. It outlines a strategic roadmap to achieve the ambitious target of USD 75 billion in exports and presents numerous suggestions to elevate India’s standing in the international gems and jewellery trade. The book also narrates the captivating journey of diamonds from their geological formation to their transformation into exquisite jewellery pieces.
Dr. Tantia has dedicated a chapter to the valuable opinions of distinguished personalities related to the gems and jewellery trade, enhancing the book’s relevance and depth. The book has garnered widespread appreciation, including a commendation from Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal. In his remarks, the Minister stated, “Dr. Hemant Kumar Tantia has illuminated India’s future in his book ‘The Sparkling Future.’ Through this book, he has demonstrated how the gems and jewellery trade sector can rapidly grow to fulfill Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of making India a developed nation. He highlights its potential contributions and immense export possibilities, providing deep insights and historical context. I congratulate him and am confident that this book will serve as a crucial document and guide for those working in this sector.”
“The Sparkling Future” is not just a book but a beacon for the gems and jewellery industry, offering strategic insights and a pathway for a brighter future for India’s export potential.
In his book, Dr. Tantia notes, “The export of gems and jewellery has a significant impact on our economy. It contributes about 2 to 7 percent to India’s GDP and is a major source of the country’s foreign exchange reserves. The contribution of gems and jewellery to the total merchandise exports ranges from 8 to 14 percent. This trade, being labour-intensive, also creates millions of employment opportunities. Considering the growth potential of this sector, I pursued PhD research from 2018 to 2022 on the problems and solutions in the export of gems and jewellery and measures to accelerate its growth. During this study, I interacted with over 500 key individuals associated with the industry, including renowned exporters, importers, retailers, bankers, government officials, and consumers. I also conducted an in-depth analysis of international research papers and data obtained from reliable sources. From this research, I concluded that India has enormous potential and opportunities in exporting diamonds, gold, silver, and other precious stones. Through my thesis, I provided various suggestions to industry stakeholders and the government for making India’s export in the gems and jewellery sector more effective. I believe that if thoughtful and strategic efforts are made in the field of gems and jewellery exports, India can become a leading player in the global market. This would not only lead to a significant increase in foreign exchange reserves but also create job opportunities for millions of people.”
