Buying gold or silver jewellery should always be a joyful experience. But what happens if your BIS hallmarked product seems suspicious? What if you want to verify whether the hallmarked jewellery is authentic, or you want proof that the hallmarked jewellery is really authentic? Then there are two things could be done.
PHYSICAL WAY OF CHECKING THE AUTHENTICITY OF THE JEWELLERY
In order to verify the purity of the jewellery, a customer could straight away check the authenticity of the HUID through the application itself. If a customer has further suspicion, they could always visit the A&H centres of BIS in order to check the purity physically.
BIS has authorized Assaying & Hallmarking (A&H) centres across India. Customers can take their jewellery to these centres to verify HUID, check metal purity, and ensure hallmarks are authentic. If any discrepancies are found, complaints can also be lodged directly at these centres. This option provides an additional layer of assurance, especially for high-value jewellery or for consumers who want in-person validation alongside the app.
If a consumer wants their jewellery hallmarked at these centres, additional charges apply — for gold, it is usually ₹45 per article (with a minimum consignment charge of ₹200), and for silver, ₹35 per article (with a minimum of ₹150) A&H centre will charge. These charges are standardised by BIS and apply only at officially recognised centres.
NON–PHYSICAL WAY OF CHECKING THE AUTHENTICITY OF THE JEWELLERY
BIS Care App is the solution for this problem.
BIS Care App is India’s official mobile app from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), which not only lets you verify jewellery authenticity through HUID but also allows you to lodge complaints directly with the authorities.
If a discrepancy is found between the HUID and the purity test in the centre, a customer can lodge a complaint from the centre itself.
In the case that a customer cannot visit the A&H centre physically, the BIS Care App brings this assurance right to their fingertips. Filing a complaint through the app is straightforward, fast, and ensures that your grievance reaches the right officials without unnecessary delays.
