GJC Supports Government on Customs Duty Hike
After the Government of India increased customs duty on gold and silver, the leading gems and jewellery industry body, the Gem & Jewellery Council (GJC), expressed support for the decision. The organization stated that considering the current economic conditions, the move is a temporary and balanced step taken in the national interest.
GJC Chairman Rajesh Rokde said that the entire gems and jewellery industry stands firmly with the government and respects policy decisions taken for the benefit of the nation. He added that the Indian jewellery industry has consistently demonstrated resilience and adaptability during challenging periods, and therefore traders should not panic.
He further stated that GJC will continue to work closely with the government and other stakeholders to maintain market stability, strengthen consumer confidence, and ensure the sustainable growth of the industry.
Meanwhile, GJC Vice Chairman Avinash Gupta said that gold and jewellery are deeply connected with India’s economy, traditions, and savings culture. At such a time, the trade community should continue business operations with confidence and responsibility instead of reacting with fear.
He also said that GJC fully supports the country’s broader economic priorities and will continue constructive engagement with policymakers to safeguard the interests of artisans, traders, and consumers, while ensuring long-term stability and growth of the sector.
