When buying jewellery, the purity of the ornament is the first thing that comes to every consumer’s mind. And in order verify the purity of any gold or silver jewellery, the government introduced Hallmarking, backed by a digital verification system that can be accessed on any smartphone today.
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), India’s national standards body, oversees hallmarking. Formed under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, BIS ensures that jewellery and other certified products meet strict quality standards.
Hallmarking in gold jewellery consists of three key markings: the BIS Standard Mark, the gold purity expressed in carats and fineness, and a six-digit alphanumeric HUID code. The HUID (Hallmarking Unique Identification) is a unique six-digit alphanumeric code stamped on each individual gold jewellery article.
Gold jewellery can be hallmarked across the following purity levels:
9K (37.5% purity)
14K (58.5% purity)
18K (75.0% purity)
20K (83.3% purity)
22K (91.6% purity)
23K (95.8% purity)
24K Special (99.5% purity)
Silver jewellery, meanwhile, is hallmarked in the following purity grades:
800 (lowest grade)
835
900
925
970
990 (highest grade)
Generally, gold jewellery in India is commonly sold in purity levels such as 24K (99.5% pure), 23K (95.8%), 22K (91.6%) etc while silver jewellery is usually marked as 990, 970, 925, 900 etc depending on its purity. When jewellery is hallmarked, each piece starts to carry a HUID — Hallmark Unique Identification Number, a 6-digit code that makes it easy to verify the authenticity and purity of your jewellery.

The HUID is engraved on the jewellery, even on the detachable part of the jewellery.
HOW TO VERIFY HUID?
In order to verify the authenticity of the HUID provided in the jewellery, BIS has launcheda application called the BIS Care App. Verifying the jewellery through the BIS Care App is simple and takes only a few minutes. Here’s how you can do it:
- Download the BIS Care App
Install the BIS Care App from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store on your smartphone.

2. Open the App and Select ‘Verify HUID.’
Once the app opens, you will see multiple options. Tap on “Verify HUID” to begin jewellery verification.

3. Enter the HUID Number
Carefully enter the 6-digit HUID engraved on your jewellery. This number is usually stamped near the BIS logo and purity mark.

4. View Jewellery Details
After submitting the HUID, the app displays official details such as:
- Jeweller Registration Number
- AHC Recognition Number
- Article Type
- Date of hallmarking
- Purity of the Article
5. Match the Details with Your Jewellery
Check whether the information shown in the app matches your jewellery invoice and markings. If everything matches, your jewellery is authentic and BIS-hallmarked.
What’s more, the app also allows you to lodge complaints if the HUID is invalid or the details don’t match, giving consumers a direct way to protect themselves from counterfeit or under-purity jewellery.
