Silver Hallmarking, 9 Carat jewellery hallmarking, BIS Consumers may soon purchase 9-carat gold jewellery with a BIS HUID hallmarking tag, a significant addition to the existing hallmarking standards for 24, 22, 20, 18, and 14-carat jewellery. This move makes lower-carat gold jewellery more accessible and affordable as gold prices recently surpassed ₹77,000 per 10 grams.
Meanwhile, silver hallmarking is set to commence under a voluntary scheme. Although not yet mandatory, experts suggest it could become compulsory in the future.

Milestones in Hallmarking
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) recently launched the fourth phase of mandatory hallmarking, expanding consumer trust through HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification). Since its inception, over 40 crore gold jewellery items have been hallmarked, ensuring transparency in the market. Registered jewellers have grown from 34,647 to 1,94,039, and Assaying and Hallmarking Centres (AHCs) increased from 945 to 1,622.
BIS CARE App for Consumer Support
The BIS CARE app provides consumers with essential information about hallmarked jewellery, including:
Jeweller’s registration details.
Assaying and Hallmarking Centre information.
